iq google street view

Google Street View vehicles have logged millions of miles in an effort to display video of every street imaginable, but unfortunately the G-Mobile is too big for a few European roads. But instead of leaving the thin and narrow out of Street View, Team Google has employed the diminutive Toyota iQ onto the smallest streets in Belgium to to go where Google Street View previously could not travel.

Scroll down
to watch the little iQ do its thing. Some of the roads only look big enough for a Schwinn, but the smallest Toyota does the trick just fine.

Official: McLaren GT division moving into new facility closer to Woking

McLaren MP4-12C GT3 - front three-quarter view, yellow

Think of the name McLaren and you're likely to conjure up images of two different things: grand prix racing and exotic supercars. Each of these two core areas of competence has its own division under the McLaren Group umbrella, but in between them sits a third division called McLaren GT.

The operation is dedicated to developing and supporting the above-pictured MP4-12C GT3 racing car, of which it has sold 25 examples to 13 teams currently fielding them in racing series across Europe and around the world. But while it has operated out of a dedicated facility in Leicestershire - a good two-hour drive down the M1 from the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking - the sports racing division is coming back home.

The new base for McLaren GT is being built near the group's state-of-the-art headquarters at the facility that housed the F1 team until 2004 when the MTC was completed. The 60,000-square-foot complex will include offices, garages, engine workshops and more all under one roof, in close proximity to the F1 team and the automotive assembly line, and most crucially, allow the sports racing division and its clients more direct access to the same simulators used by Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.

The ‘Home of British Motor Racing’ was the scene of the latest battle in the Classic Teams Championship. Silverstone’s ‘historic’ layout, with its long straights and sweeping turns, is one of the few venues in iRacing of the same era as a ground effect Formula One. Over the four days of racing, 68 competitors had run and won 11 official races. And guess who was back in front? QUALIFYING Reigning champion Fritsche again blitzed the field in his Ferrari at Silverstone. His fastest lap of 1.24.055 may have left him just shy of being the only driver to break into the 1.23s, but also put him over half a second ahead of the field. Back in top form this week was Nixon (Lotus) second fastest on a 1.24.625 and just [...]

IndyCar drivers are preparing for what could be the hottest Indy 500 on record, with temperatures of 35.C forecast for today's race. Currently, the warmest Indy 500 in history was in 1937, when Wilbur Shaw withstood 33.8.C to take his victory, however reigning series champion Dario Franchitti believes that the conditions will pose more of a problem for the crews than the drivers. "The forecast is in the mid-90s [mid-30s celsius]," said the Ganassi driver

Evanta Aston Martin DB7/DB4 GT Zagato Evocation

In love with the classic DB4 GT? You're in good company. The first of a series of collaborations between Aston Martin and Zagato is one of the most beautiful automobiles ever made. But getting your hands on one would not be a cheap proposition.

After initially unveiling the DB4 GT at the 1960 London Motor Show, Aston Martin built 19 examples through 1963. In 1991 an additional four examples were built, followed by another pair in 2000. But no matter which batch you're looking at, prices still exceed the million-dollar mark whenever one goes up for auction. In fact, a Sanction II coupe recently sold at the Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell for a record $1.9 million. So what's a fan to do?

British coachbuilder Evanta Motor Company claims to have the solution. The company has a background in creating modern replicas of the DB4 GT, among other classic Astons, but for this example, it didn't start from the ground up. Instead it took a DB7 - of which Aston produced some 7,000 examples in its ten-year production run - and rebodied it to look like a classic Zagato.

This particular conversion is based on the DB7 V12 Vantage model, with an earlier version of the same 6.0-liter V12 still employed in the latest Astons producing 420 horsepower. That's considerably more than the 314 hp offered by the 3.7-liter straight six in the original DB4 GT, and it is mated to an automatic gearbox and all the modern accoutrements, from air conditioning to air bags.

The blueish-silver bodywork hides a red leather interior complete with full rollcage and retrofitted dashboard and seats. While all the details surely didn't come cheap, you can bet it cost less for Evanta to create than an original DB4 GT - or for that matter, a 2002 DB7 Zagato.

Aston Martin AM 310 Concept

Design language is a tricky thing. Err too much on one side and nobody will recognize your cars. Fall on the other and all your cars will look the same. Aston Martin, you might say, emerges more on the latter side than the former. Which isn't to say that we don't like how their high-end GTs look, mind you. But if any company is in need of a design shakeup, you could argue that it's Aston.

That's at least a little bit of what the British automaker shot for this weekend at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, the glamorous open-air auto show on the shores of Italy's Lake Como. There it presented the AM 310, a concept that ostensibly previews the replacement for the DB9 and DBS.

Said to be based on the same VH architecture that underpins the company's entire lineup (save the One-77, which has reportedly finished its production run anyway), the AM 310 packs a revised version of the same 6.0-liter V12 that was first developed for the DB7. It's packed into a shape that is distinctly Aston Martin, only in an updated form.

Gaydon has yet to release any official photos or press release on the new concept, so while you wait for them, you'll want to check out the videos below for a closer look - if only for the otherworldly sound the engine makes.

Official: Mercedes-Benz rolls out the gold carpet in Cannes

Mercedes-Benz at 2012 Cannes International Film Festival

We've seen some rather unfortunately garish chrome-jobs in our day, and yes, some have even ladled on the shiny stuff in gold. Many of those have also been Mercedes-Benz vehicles. But while we've come to expect that kind of bling from owners with cash coming out of their Ferragamo shoes, we didn't expect the same treatment to be carried out by Mercedes-Benz itself on its own vehicles.

We were wrong. Because that's precisely what the German automaker had in store for this year's Cannes International Film Festival. For the awarding of the prestigious 65th Palme d'Or, Benz rolled out a fleet of vehicles wrapped in gold in which it shuttled around movie stars and other celebrities. Among the attendees were the CLS four-door coupe, ML sport-ute and S-Class limousine.

The AMG division was also on hand to show off the new SL65 and offer celebrities a chance to drive their latest offerings. Hopefully those convinced on the Cote d'Azur to place an order will have the good sense to forgo the gilded treatment, though. See what Daimler had to say for itself in the press release below.

Taming Jefferson

Summit Point Raceway is one of the more identifiable locations for inRacingNews Challenge competitors, as the series’ Pontiac Solstices, Spec RacerFords, and Mazda MX-5 Roadsters attempt to tame its various layouts several times each season. Week Two of 2012 Season Two featured the first Summit Point visit of the schedule, a slate of 20-lap races on the tricky Jefferson Reverse layout. With one win in two starts, Oleg Predko led the Solstice class with 148 points in a low-scoring week that saw only ten sim-racers break the 100-point barrier. But the other two classes featured high-scoring leaders: Mitch Weatherly posted a huge week in SRF, scoring 231 points by taking the victory against a loaded field in his lone online race of the week. Meanwhile, Petr Dolezal posted a particularly [...]

Wisconsin Wire Act

With three weeks in the online books for the 2012 Season 2 iRacing.com Star Mazda Championship, Tony Repussard is a perfect three-for-three in Star Mazda races and holds a commanding 110 point lead over second place Joshua Chin. But for the second week in a row, Repussard had to scratch and claw his way to a victory, this time over Australian driver and Formula Renault 3.5 with Lotus World Series competitor Richie Stanaway at Road America. Starting from his usual pole position in Sunday’s 18:30 GMT race, Repussard quickly shot away from the field through the first few turns of the race. But behind him, a large battle for second place began to brew between Michele Mancusi, Stanaway, Chin and Joni Törmälä. Coming out of the final turn to complete [...]

Classic Teams Championship: Round 3 Brabham. Hailwood. Hill. Cooper. Surtees. Hawthorn. Clark. Not only are they some of the greatest names in Formula One history, but also the names given to some of the greatest pieces of road in Formula One history.  A true driver’s circuit with few equals, Brands Hatch hosted Round 3 of the Classic Teams Championship. 63 sim racers would compete across a dozen official races over four days. The picturesque valleys of Brondehach (Gaelic for “wooded slope” and “forest entrance”) echoed with the shrill screams of the Cosworth DFV for a week’s worth of online racing. QUALIFYING On his return to the cockpit from a three week layoff, reigning champion Fritsche blitzed the field with a scintillating 1:10.522 second pole time. The only man in the [...]

Williams calm about Monaco chances

Williams is not allowing itself to get too confident about its chances of another victory in the Monaco Grand Prix - despite Pastor Maldonado's impressive track record there and the boost delivered by its success in Spain. The Grove-based outfit ended an eight-year win drought at Barcelona, and its strong showing there has left it as a serious contender for another triumph on the streets of Monte Carlo. But Williams board member Toto Wolff insists the team is not getting too far ahead of itself, and will instead approach the weekend completely open-minded about its chances.

Fast N Loud

If you've ever sunk a Saturday afternoon watching a Wheeler Dealers marathon on BBC America, we don't need to tell you the show is plenty addictive. A tag team salesman and mechanic snag slightly run-down cars and SUVs, fix a few simple problems and flip them for a profit in the UK.

Now it looks as if the Discovery Channel is set to unleash an Americanized version of the show. Fast N' Loud follows a shop as they seek out classic cars and trucks, customize them and work to sell them at a profit. It looks a bit like American Pickers met Pimp My Ride and Overhaulin in a bar bathroom and this is the fruit of their rendezvous.

We will, of course, tune in if for no other reason than the guys look to have gotten their hands on an early '50s Oldsmobile Coupe. That's one of our favorites. The show premiers on Wednesday, June 6 at 10 p.m. Eastern on the Discovery Channel. Scroll down to check out the teaser for yourself.

Official: Toyota aims to put more "stock" into stock cars with 2013 NASCAR Camry

2013 Toyota Camry NASCAR

NASCAR may have once been a form of motorsport in which only domestic automakers competed. And that's largely still the case, with one notable exception: Toyota. The Japanese automaker faced some difficulty breaking into the Good Ol' Boys racing series, but though some purists may still malign it, Toyota is in NASCAR to stay. And this is its latest car.

"Based", in design anyway, on the latest Camry, the new stock car from Toyota Racing Development is set to compete in the Sprint Cup next season, alongside the new Ford Fusion (among other competitors from Dodge and Chevy). The result of "an aggressive redesign", the new racer was developed with input from the company's Calty Design studio to look more like the road-going Camry than ever before.

Yes, it does bear a resemblance to its road-going cousin, especially in the fascia. That said, it's still a composite body over a tube frame powered by a V8 engine driving the rear wheels. In other words, this is a Camry in name only.

Of course it doesn't hurt Toyota's case that the Camry is built in America with more American components than most "domestic" vehicles, and now the stock car looks more stock, too. Keep reading below for the full press release.

Button cautious on Monaco GP chances

Jenson Button is cautious about McLaren's chances of winning the Monaco Grand Prix, with the team's MP4-27 not particularly suited to the demands of the famous street circuit. The 2012 McLaren has shown itself to excel in high-speed corners - something that is lacking in Monaco – which means Button and team-mate Lewis Hamilton will have to push extra hard if they want to triumph at Formula 1's blue riband event. Looking ahead to the weekend, Button reckoned that there was still plenty to look forward to though.

Arizona DOT Study: Compact, Mixed-Use Development Leads to Less Traffic

Image: Arizona Department of Transportation
Does walkable development really lead to worse traffic congestion? Opponents of urbanism often say so, citing impending traffic disaster to rally people against, say, a new mixed-use project proposed in their backyards. But new research provides some excellent evidence to counter those claims.

Rossi hoping for wet French GP

Valentino Rossi reckons the wet weather which is forecast for tomorrow's French Grand Prix could favour Ducati. Having qualified a year-best seventh at Le Mans, Rossi said he was happy with both his showing and the competitiveness of the Ducati - but said he could potentially fare even better if Sunday's race runs, as expected, in the wet. "Today was a bit more positive: we put together yesterday's settings with a few modifications and I improved," Rossi explained

Video: Lincoln goes back 80 years to sell the 2013 MKS

Lincoln has released the first 30-second ad spot for the 2013 MKS, with its seventeen intial seconds spent covering the era of Lincoln glory from 1922 to 1976. The ad almost feels like an apology for the MKS, as if the ad team really wanted to sell the 2013 MKZ but was assigned the penalty-box MKS and had their protestations silenced with, "Just make something!"

We think the MKS deserves a little more love than that.
