LeMons Halloween Hooptiefest Inspections: Saabs, Volvos, a Solara, and Gangnam Style [Photo Gallery]

The last time we came to New Hampshire Motor Speedway, in May, we were floored by surrealism of the self-towing trailer race car. This time, we’re bewildered by the combination of fall weather in New England, disturbing Halloween costumes, and the biggest arsenal of LeMons-style potato cannons we’ve ever seen. The team that brought this [...]

Senna: Point shows team back on track

Bruno Senna reckons that scoring another point for Williams in Sunday's Indian Grand Prix is evidence that the pace of the race-winning FW33 is getting back on track after the team's disappointing showing in Korea . Both he and team-mate Pastor Maldonado reported that they were much happier with the car's handling and performance during the 60-lap race, and in Senna's case that resulted in his eighth points finish of the season with tenth place . "We had a strong car in the race and after a disappointing qualifying yesterday, getting a point means that I am happy with today's performance," said Senna, who started the race from 13th in the grid.

Report: Why Hurricane Sandy fallout will hit luxury carmakers particularly hard

When we say the worst of Hurricane Sandy has passed, we're only talking about the weather phenomena; the depth of the storm's other impacts will take time to measure. Many of the estimated 4,751 car dealers in the states affected by Sandy spent the run-up to the storm moving their inventory to high ground if possible and bracing their dealerships for the storm. Many had already been through Hurricane Irene had some practice, but, as one dealer said, the water levels before Sandy hit were already at Irene levels, so all they could do was hope they got it right.

It's not that there's ever a good time for a civilization-battering natural disaster, but for dealers, Hurricane Sandy coming at the end of the month was the worst possible time. These last few days of the month are when they'd be discounting cars and courting shoppers to meet their monthly quotas. Luxury dealers might take the brunt of the hit, as a report in Bloomberg indicates that Volvo, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Acura sell from 23 to 25 percent of their wares in New York, Washington and Philadelphia.

According to the The New York Times, as of Tuesday night there were eight million people without power due to the storm, 2.3 million of them in New York state and another 2.6 million in New Jersey. Power outages there might last the rest of the week, if not longer. The Washington Post reported that the D.C. area is getting back to business, but it was shut down entirely for two days. Elsewhere, it's been reported that "the Northeast back to business," but that's the business of cleaning up, not the business of selling cars.

The 'good' news, relatively speaking, for dealers and the luxury makers is that Hurricane Sandy didn't change analysts' sales predictions for the month, nor the year. October is traditionally the slowest month of the year anyway, and the annualized rate of 14.8 to 14.9 million 2012 sales might be a little soggy, but appears to have emerged intact.

SEMA: Mazda MX-5 Super25 Concept lights the way to motorsports glory

Mazda MX-5 Super25

Following up on last year's MX-5 Super20 Concept, Mazda has pulled the covers off a somewhat different, though still motorsports-oriented, two-seat roadster concept.

Mazda says the Super25 was created with endurance racing in mind, with a set of PIAA 40 Series halogen lamps front and center to light the way ahead, and a Sparco racing seat, harness and steering wheel keep the driver well in control. An AiM MXL data acquisition logger is set into the dash to help keep track of essential track and car data.

Painted up in Mazdaspeed racing colors - black, gray and red - with Brilliant White highlights, the Super25 carries the number 55 proudly on its sides. This number is significant, as those are the digits that Mazda's historic Le Mans racer wore in 1991.

Check out all the details in the press release below and the live photos above.

Ford up $1.6B in Q3 thanks to record profits in North America

Now that the bell has rung to signal the end of Q3 2012, Ford is standing in the ring with both hands in the air like Rocky: The company's overall profit of $1.63 billion for the last three months is nearly equal to its entire 2011 total of $1.94B. Those numbers come thank to the record-breaking pretax operating profit in North America of $2.33B on revenues of $19.5B, the third straight quarter that The Blue Oval has crossed the two-billion mark. Customers are paying more, on average, for Ford vehicles, another contributor to the company maintaining double-digit profit margins on its products.

True, there are a couple of bruises. Losses in Europe continue, with The Continent suffering an even larger decline in pretax revenues to $468 million, and European revenue has dropped to $5.8 billion compared to $7.8 billion a year ago. South America is another sore spot, with exchange rates and currency restrictions being blamed for a 23-percent decline in revenue to $2.3 billion and a screeching 97-percent shrinkage in pretax operating profit to $9 million, down from $276 million in the same quarter last year. Global revenue is also down three percent to $32.1 billion.

But North America's numbers have kept the tide rising, even with the rise in the company's North American tax rate to 30 percent, a 20-percent jump over last year. Ford's prognosis for the rest of the year is for strong results and even greater production - 1.5 million in Q4 versus 1.4 million in Q3 - even with expanded costs to market the new models it is introducing as well as continued challenges in Europe. That means great news for two of our three domestic automakers, following the Chrysler announcement of an 80-percent jump in Q3 profit to $381 million. General Motors will report tomorrow. For the inner CFO in you, Ford's number-filled press release is below.

GM's Flagship Lambda Is (Still) A Smooth Operator

2013 Buick Enclave

Consumers shopping for a domestic full-size crossover have heard all about GM's triplets. The Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave are a very appealing and talented group of siblings. Entering their fifth year of production, albeit middle-age in the automotive industry, each is attractive, well-rounded and very capable on the paved dance floor. While all share nearly identical base DNA and the same basic running gear, subtle physical differences and unique personalities emerge between the trio when one digs a bit deeper.

The most polished of the threesome, without question, is the Enclave from Buick. Fresh off a mid-cycle update (as are its siblings), the flagship of the platform boasts a facelift, innovative new features and an upgraded demeanor for the new model year.

But are the improvements enough to make it the Lambda most worthy of a long-term relationship? And, if it is the best of its breed, is it good enough to secure the segment? We spent an afternoon with the enhanced 2013 Buick Enclave to find out.

Raikkonen kicking himself over result

Kimi Raikkonen admitted he only has himself to blame for the set-up change that cost him the chance of a decent grid slot for the Indian Grand Prix. The Finn believes his Lotus had the potential to qualify right behind the dominant Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, but a lack of grip left him down in seventh . "I thought that we should have probably been third or fourth here after Friday practice," said Raikkonen.

The lowly pushrod has been a favorite fall guy for bad engine design. Lorenzo: Overcoming Honda very hard

Jorge Lorenzo declared his second MotoGP world championship incredibly hard to win, after clinching the crown with second place in Australia . Lorenzo's maiden title in 2010 was won in a year when Yamaha was the pacesetting team and his team-mate Valentino Rossi was ruled out for several races due to injury. This year Honda was often the quicker team, and Lorenzo had to fight a rearguard action to cling on to his points lead as Dani Pedrosa closed in.

Video: Watch Graham Hill describe a classic lap of Monaco

Graham Hill

Normally when a Formula 1 driver takes us on a lap of a circuit, it's done with the visual aid of a car actually traveling the track - the driver narrates what we see on screen. In the good old days before every car sported cameras, however, it wasn't like that.

Graham Hill, double World Championship winner and father of Damon Hill, was asked to describe a lap of Monaco in 1968. He won the race five times in his tragically shortened career, and the so-called King of Monaco explained a lap the good old-fashioned way: he told a story and took time to focus on the good bits. Watch him recount it in the video below.

Report: VW outsells GM in China for first time in 8 years

In case you didn't know, Volkswagen is hell-bent on becoming the largest automaker in the world. The German carmaker has inched closer to that goal, having outsold General Motors in China last quarter for the first time in eight years.

Volkswagen's sales in China, its largest marker, increased by 21 percent last quarter to 704,991 units. Those numbers almost tripled GM's third-quarter growth, and were enough to beat out the American automaker's 664,765 sales. GM, however, still leads in year-to-date sales in China by a slim margin of around 77,000 units. The Asian nation also happens to be GM's largest market, and according to the report in Automotive News, China's car market may grow to be larger than the US, Japan and Germany combined in three years' time.

About the news his company was bested in China by VW last quarter, GM CEO Dan Akerson is quoted saying, "It's not whether you're the biggest car manufacturer. It's whether you want to be the most profitable." It should be noted of these figures that GM includes truck figures, yet excludes Hong Kong and Macau from its Chinese sales numbers, while VW does just the opposite. Through September of this year, Volkswagen had 5 of the 10 best selling vehicles in China. GM boasted three of the cars on that list.

One car not on China's Top 10 list is the Malibu. Though GM's second-best selling car in the US, it has been called a "disaster" by Lin Huaibin of IHS Global Insight. The roughly 29,000 units sold were apparently unable to hang with VW's Skoda competitor.

The Automotive News report cites anti-Japanese sentiments and older GM product as reasons for Volkswagen's third quarter rally. Other brands with increased sales included Hyundai, Kia and Ford, citing that the jump in sales for these brands helped their parent companies counter losses incurred in the beleaguered European car market.

Pirelli predicts teams will try one stop

Pirelli believes that the tyre strategy for the Indian Grand Prix will be a near-repeat of that executed in Korea - with wear rather than degradation being the key consideration. Early running at the Buddh International Circuit has pointed towards a good life for the tyres, leaving Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery thinking there is a chance that some teams could try a one-stop strategy.

Report: Jaguar Land Rover to build design studios in US, China

To better get a feel for the tastes of its customers, Jaguar Land Rover has decided to open design studios in the US and China, Jag design chief Ian Callum tells Automotive News Europe. US and Chinese sales rank second and third behind the UK for the Jaguar Land Rover group.

"We are going to go out there to get a feeling for what the market is and what people like," Callum says.

Despite the desire to become engrossed in local flavor, Callum reassures that design at the two brands will remain British.

"We will never design a car around another culture," he says, "but we will certainly build into that vehicle certain national tastes for that market."

Our own Zach Bowman recently referred to the F-Type as "sultry" and a few other things we couldn't print for a mixed-age audience. If Callum and JLR can improve on something that gorgeously covetable, consider us onboard.

Williams Storm into CTC Lead

Virginia International Raceway presents one of the premier challenges in all of iRacing, but it can also produce some great sim-racing. It’s also the nearest thing iRacing has to the challenges and variety of corners provided by the Nurburgring.  As such VIR has a hard-core of supporters but, historically across all series, participation tends to drop for races there and once again this occurred with just 84 drivers participating in Week 11 of the Classic Teams Championship. Jan Beyer started the most races, winning one of his four starts with no-one winning two races as only seven races (including one split) started.  Championship leader Gernot Fritsche, failed to win as Henri Salminen top scored, but his 220 points were plenty to surge him into what is likely to be an [...]

Official: 2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP will start at $39,950*

2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP - front three-quarter view

Get your wallets ready, folks. The 2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP arrives this fall, and we've now learned that the cost of entry for the potent little hatchback is $39,950, (*) including $700 for destination.

Aside from an adorably tough appearance, that just-under-$40,000 price tag gets you a whole host of performance goodies, including a turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for 218 horsepower and as much as 207 pound-feet of torque. No, that isn't any more oomph than what you get in the standard JCW Hardtop, but there's a whole lot more to the GP kit. For starters, there's a fully adjustable coilover suspension, not to mention a reduction in overall weight - at 2,558 pounds, the GP is 121 pounds lighter than a normal John Cooper Works Hardtop.

A Mini spokesperson confirmed to Autoblog that the JCW GP can only be purchased one way, and will be offered as an option package on the standard John Cooper Works Hardtop. Its starting price represents a $5,150 increase over a standard JCW model, and is the most expensive model in the Mini range (the next being the $35,550 John Cooper Works Countryman).

Scroll down for a full look at pricing for the 2013 model year Mini lineup.

Video: Watch Hennessey-tuned Cadillac CTS-V run over 220 mph on a Texas road

Hennessey VR1200 Toll Road Run

Texas holds the excellent honor of playing host to the road with the highest speed limit in the US. It seems no coincidence, then, that the speed-hungry minds at Hennessey Performance call the Lone Star State home as well. Hennessey recently turned its attention to the freshly opened toll road SH130 for a quick sprint, and with the help of the Texas Departments of Transportation and Public Safety, driver Brian Smith ran the VR1200 all the way to 220.5 mph before running out of road. That's right, the wicked, much-modified Cadillac CTS-V Coupe actually had more left in its top end.

As you may recall, the VR1200 gets its grunt from a twin-turbocharged 7.0-liter V8 engine good for 1,226 horsepower and 1,109 pound-feet of torque. Hennessey paired that maniacal mill with a carbon fiber widebody kit and a set of carbon ceramic brakes among other goodies, and the team says the VR1200 is good for a top speed of 242 mph. Check it out in action below.
