Crutchlow upbeat despite missing third

Cal Crutchlow said his disappointment at missing a second MotoGP podium at Aragon was tempered by the fact that, unlike last year, he was at least in a position to challenge. The Briton claimed his breakthrough grand prix rostrum at Brno last month, and was in contention to add to his tally throughout this weekend's 23-lap race in Spain.

2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP Hatchback: Mini Has Saved Its Fastest for Lastest

Mini began producing 30-something-hp hatchbacks in the early ’60s—before even the Rolling Stones formed—but unlike Mick Jagger, the days of the original Mini are behind us. In fact, even the 114-hp comeback-tour Mini seems like something of a distant memory. And that’s especially true with the introduction of the second-generation John Cooper Works GP hatchback, [...]

Roselli, Gelink Crowned 2012 Premier GRAND-AM Champions

A visit to Lime Rock Park for the tenth and final round of Premier Grand-Am iRacing.com Online Sports Car Series last weekend heralded the crowning of two champions in the mixed class online racing series: Anthony Roselli (Daytona Prototypes) and Dave Gelink (Mustang FR500S).  With nearly $3500 in total prize money on the line, this year’s GRAND-AM-sanctioned series proved to be as competitive as ever, with a host of sim racer collecting wins in each class over the course of the season. Mercedes ‘didn’t offer more money’

Mercedes did not break the bank to secure Lewis Hamilton's services, claims its team principal Ross Brawn. Hamilton's move from McLaren to Mercedes came amid suggestions that the Brackley-based outfit was offering him a higher retainer than his current team - as well as greater commercial freedom to find personal sponsors. However, Brawn says that Hamilton's motivation to move teams had nothing to do with money – and was instead about finding a new challenge in his career

An Ohio Sprawl Leader Begins to Recognize Its Mistakes

Dublin, a wealthy suburb of Columbus, Ohio, was a regional pioneer in job sprawl in the 1990s. Built on former corn fields, this city of 42,000 had barely 5,000 residents in 1980. Team owner Joe Gibbs has hailed the role Denny Hamlin played in galvanising his team en route to securing his outfit's 100th NASCAR victory. After running out of fuel and losing a top five finish on the final lap at Chicagoland , Hamlin then had to contend with a team error when his tyres were set to the wrong pressure in qualifying at Loudon, leaving him a lowly 32nd . Paris: Smart Forstars Concept is a rolling drive-in movie theater in orange

Smart Forstars Concept

Smart tells us that its new Forstars Concept is a Sports Utility Coupé. We're pretty sure that's a misnomer. After all, the electric powertrain, while supremely efficient, isn't a powerhouse. Plus, with room for just two occupants and a golf bag plus toiletries, utility doesn't really seem to be its forte either.

So, what is the Smart Forstars good for? Well, judging from our image gallery, it makes an excellent prop for impossibly cute auto show models to lean against. Plus, it's got a completely clear roof, which is how it got its name - you can stare at the stars... get it? Oh, and it also sports an integrated projector on its hood for impromptu drive-in movie nights.

Power comes from a 60-kW electric motor and 17.6-kWh lithium ion battery pack, and Smart claims a top speed of 80 miles per hour.

As you can see, the exterior, which reportedly previews the automaker's future design direction, is painted in a bright hue that Smart calls Alubeam Rouge, and the interior is finished in white, red and matching orange. Check out the nifty projector feature in the official video below and be sure to peruse the official press release while you're at it.

Paris: 2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP marks the return of something awesome

2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP

For the past six years, members of the Autoblog team have been dreaming of a return of the Mini John Cooper Works GP kit. We fell head-over-heels in love with the two-seat hot hatch when it launched in limited production in 2006, and we're happy to say that our little baby is back. Feast your eyes on the 2013 Mini JCW GP, which makes its first public debut here at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

And what's not to love? Under the hood there's a 218-horsepower version of Mini's 1.6-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder, also cranking out a healthy 192 pound-feet of torque (or 207 lb-ft during brief moments of overboost). Hitting 62 miles per hour will take just 6.3 seconds, and hardcore drivers will enjoy the fact that Mini has employed a fully adjustable coilover suspension that allows the car to sit 20 millimeters closer to the ground. Even with the performance additions, the JCW GP weighs in at 2,558 pounds - just over 20 pounds heavier than a base Cooper hardtop with the naturally aspirated engine.

Our favorite part about the new Mini GP formula is how much of its styling is reminiscent of the original GP, right down to the unique 17-inch four-spoke wheels, gray-and-red color scheme (with truly adorable red mirrors), and big ol' spoiler at the rear. We can't wait to drive it.

Scroll down for the full details in case you missed them the first time around, and click through the attached image galleries to get your drool on.

Paris: MkVII Volkswagen Golf shows off its slimmer bod

Volkswagen Golf

When we first saw the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf in the manufacturer-provided stock photos, we were a little let down. In a word, it looked... droopy. But now that we've seen Volkswagen's new global hatch in person, we have to say, it's a handsome little thing.

Perhaps the most remarkable fact about the new Golf is that it's a full 220 pounds lighter than the outgoing model. That's all thanks to the new MQB platform that underpins the compact VW, which uses lightweight, high-strength steel in droves.

In Europe, buyers will be able to choose from a range of gasoline and diesel powerplants, including a new 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four that's reportedly good for about 49 miles per gallon (on the European cycle). Here in the States, rumor has it that the aging 2.5-liter inline-five will be swapped out for a new 1.8-liter turbo-four. And we don't see any reason why the lovely 2.0-liter turbodiesel unit won't carry over, as well.

Check out a fresh batch of Golf images live from the Paris Motor Show floor in our gallery above, and scroll down to thumb through Volkswagen's press release.

Carlin appeal set for Wednesday

Carlin's appeal into Jack Harvey's time penalty from the British Formula 3 International Series round at Silverstone is to be heard this Wednesday, ensuring that the title will be decided on-track at Donington Park this weekend. Harvey finished second on the road in race two at Silverstone, but a 30-second time penalty for his part in a collision with Pipo Derani as they battled for the lead relegated him to 12th in the results. If the Motor Sports Association accepts the appeal, Harvey will move to within six points of his championship-leading team-mate Jazeman Jaafar, and will be three points behind second-placed Fortec Motorsport driver Felix Serralles.

Report: Mercedes E63 AMGs will race in Australia's V8 Supercar series next season, Holden debuts new Commodore race car

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG badge

Ford and Holden have, just the two of them, been holding down the V8 Supercars fort for years now. The introduction of the Car of the Future regulations, which puts carmaker body panels on top of a generic chassis, induced Nissan Australia to join the party in 2013 with four of its Altima sedans. Chrysler Group Australia recently said it would not be lining up. So did Mercedes-Benz Australia, but an acquisition and an international agreement between Erebus Motorsports, Stone Brothers Racing and AMG's Customer Sports Program run by HWA means E63 AMGs will be on the starting line for the first race of 2013.

SBR has been in V8SC since 1998, the entire time with Ford, and won three championships with The Blue Oval, while Erebus runs SLS AMG GT3 coupes in the Australian GT Championship. Erebus bought SBR and its two licenses and grandfathered the rights to the third license that SBR has a lease on, then worked out a deal with AMG to get factory support. That support will come via HWA, the company run by AMG co-founder Hans Werner Aufrecht, that also preps Mercedes DTM cars.

As with Nissan, which shrunk the displacement of its Nissan Motorsport VK56DE V8 from 5.6 liters to 5.0 liters to satisfy V8SC regs, the E63 AMG motor will be a 5.0-liter iteration of the 6.2-liter V8 from Erebus' SLS AMG GT3 racer. Final parity spec for the AMG engine is still being sorted out with the governing body, and even though other makers' cars have been unveiled and on the track, the AMG engine still hasn't made it to the dyno. Even so, the privately funded team has been provided the necessary millions to make it to the starting gate by Erebus owner Betty Klimenko, and SBR has proved that it knows how to build a car.

Swallowed up in all the changes coming to the sport had been Holden, but not anymore. The Holden Racing Team took the hullabaloo of the Erebus-SBR as an excuse to unveil its new matte black and gold Commodore, and you can watch the covers pulled back in the video below.

Report: Infiniti registers highest emotional attachment among car brands

Infiniti JX

Do you love your car? Like, really love your car? How about your iPhone? According to Forbes, a group called New Media Metrics has a way to quantify just how much you adore your devices, and how that emotional connection determines your purchasing behavior.

The metric is called Leveraging Emotional Attachment for Profit, or LEAP, and just like it sounds, it measures how much we love products. That affection will likely lead to purchase to fill that attachment. The LEAP index began in 2010, and for the first two year the iPod topped the list, only to be unseated by the iPhone this year. Tech is a key factor as these devices have become extensions of ourselves.

The top automaker on this list, and ranked third overall, is the Infiniti brand. Its high ranking speaks to the significance of technology in the LEAP index. While many automakers offer a wealth of in-car tech, for Infiniti, it's a defining characteristic. Features like the around-view monitor and real-time traffic and weather updates have become key selling points for the Japanese luxury brand.

The next automaker on the list is Cadillac, at the sixth spot, followed followed by BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover in spots 13 through 16, respectfully. Given Cadillac's lead over the tech-heavy German automakers it will be interesting to see how the rollout of Cadillac's CUE-equipped vehicles affects its rankings in the years to come. Check out the rest of this list and see where your favorite brands stack up below.

Official: Peugeot teases Paris-bound 208 Type R5 rally car

Peugeot's Paris Motor Show stand will need to make room for yet another addition, with the pre-production 208 Type R5 rally car slotted in for an appearance. The successor to the 207 Super 2000 that has won six Intercontinental Rally Challenge titles, Peugeot calls the tubular-framed 208 R5 a "true competition wildcat" for asphalt and gravel stages that will go on sale toward the end of 2013, to teams competing in IRC and national rallies.

Many of the specs carry over due to category requirements of the S2000 class, so the 208 Type R5 will have a five-speed sequential gearbox putting power through two locking differentials but no center diff, to all four wheels and supported by a long travel suspension. The 1.6-liter THP engine from the 207 S2000 also makes the jump, but the four-cylinder, 16-valve motor will output 280 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Four-pot calipers are mounted at all four wheels, hiding behind 18-inch wheels for tarmac stages and 15-inchers on gravel, while minimum weight for any setup on the Type R5, as per FIA regulations, will be 1,200 kilograms.

Peugeot hasn't revealed the price, but again, per the FIA, the maximum price allowed is €180,000 ($232,807 U.S.) before taxes. There's a press release below with more details, click on the photo above for a high-res glimpse, and we'll be sure to find out more once we get to Paris.
