Spy Shots: Next-gen Mini interior ditching familiar center speedo

A Reddit user has posted images of the 2015 F56 Mini Cooper, one each of the exterior and interior. As has been the case since the launch of the new Mini in 2001, the overall exterior shape underneath camouflage screams Mini, but insiders are still calling the coming F56 model "the most aggressively different new Mini yet." Inside, though, the two-door that defined premium hatchbacks has, according to its most devoted buyers, gone mainstream.

The giant ring atop the center console is there, but there's no longer a speedometer inside of it. Instead, in an integration that brings to mind words like "shoehorned," Mini designers have placed radio and telephone controls inside the bezel. According to the Mini experts at MotoringFile, the picture above is the base trim and one of four possible treatments - in the upper trims a larger screen for navigation takes up most of the space. The bezel itself is marked with mood lighting that supposedly "swirls around" when you start the car with the red toggle switch.

The speedo rests atop the steering column with a tachometer placed to its left. The BMW wheel pictured is just for the prototype - you can expect a familiar three-spoke Mini wheel when the car is revealed, and latest rumor is that the event will take place at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Heated Points Battle Atop Mustang Cup

With the Mustangs running at a series-favorite Mid-Ohio in Week 8, the points battle heated-up at the top of the standings.  Last season’s iRacing.com Mustang Cup champion, Dariusz Bielawski, has maintained the points the lead every week – with the exception of Week 3 when he temporarily surrendered the top spot to David L Brown.  However, Brown disappeared from the standings as the season continued, leaving a question as to whether anyone had a shot at preventing the Champ from repeating.  Week 8 answered that question, as it now appears a few other sim-racers are turning-in strong mid-season performances to challenge Bielawski for the lead. Cutting Bielawski’s advantage to just 12 points, Todd Honczarenko has charged from eighth after Week 1 to second place after Week 8.  Jaroslaw Grochowski is [...]

New York: 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage arrives in US this fall [w/video]

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage

Mitsubishi dealers have been painfully starved of fresh product for ages now, with their most recent new model, the bubble-shaped i electric car, already requiring a serious sales jumpstart. We've known for a while that help is on the way in the form of an all-new Outlander crossover, but we've basically only had loose confirmations to go on that the Japanese automaker would eventually reintroduce its Mirage subcompact to the American market. Today, those rumors have turned to reality, as Mitsubishi has confirmed that the five-door economy car will hit US dealerships this fall.

Every subcompact player needs a trump suit, from Ford's tech-rich Fiesta to Honda's impossibly space-efficient Fit, and the Mirage's calling card figures to be its fuel economy. Mitsubishi says it expects its 2014 Mirage to achieve 37 miles per gallon in the city and 44 on the highway (combined rating of 40 mpg) when equipped with a continuously variable transmission. Those figures are good enough, Mitsu says, to earn it the title of the most fuel-efficient gasoline vehicle sold in America that isn't a hybrid.

Of course, Mitsubishi isn't outlining any additional specs at the moment - not even engine configuration. We're expecting the company's 1.2-liter three-cylinder, which in European spec delivers a modest 79 horsepower and 78 pound-feet of torque. The Continent's Mirage weighs under 1,900 pounds, but the normally aspirated triple still makes for leisurely acceleration of 11.7 seconds to 62 miles per hour. It will be interesting to see if Mitsubishi makes some powertrain alterations to better suit American expectations.

With no performance stats on offer other than fuel economy, interested parties will need to find succor in confirmation that the model will come with features including automatic climate control, power windows and a four-speaker stereo with USB port. Options will also include navigation with rearview camera, LED interior illumination and park assist. No pricing has been released at this time.

UPDATE: Short Mirage promo video added below.

New York: Don't forget about the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS

2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Yes, everyone's eyes are on the ludicrously excellent 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 at the 2013 New York Auto Show, but Chevy also unveiled the quietly updated 2014 Camaro SS as well. The coupe wears all of the styling tweaks we saw earlier in the week, including a functional hood vent to help reduce engine bay temperatures and aerodynamic lift. The new front fascia now wears a larger lower grille to improve engine cooling as well. Indoors, buyers can opt up to a new set of Recaro sports seats.

Chevrolet graced the 2014 Camaro SS with a 426-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine, and coupe buyers will be able to opt up to a the 1LE handling package for better on track performance. If all this sounds unimpressive, remember that the engineers at Chevy were busy working on the the Boss 302-killing Z/28.

Red Bull tyre woe ‘its own fault’ – Lotus

Red Bull only has itself to blame for the tyre degradation issues it is facing, says defiant Lotus boss Eric Boullier, as the champion team lobbies for changes to the 2013 Pirellis. AUTOSPORT understands that Red Bull has begun secretly lobbying Pirelli about changing the design of this year's tyres because of the difficulties the Milton Keynes squad has faced at the first two events. One suggestion is that Pirelli abandons its current aggressive compound choice and reverts to the 2012 tyres that teams got an understanding of last season.

Video: UK driver bricks father's Audi TT into side of house

A family in Lowestoft, UK woke up to quite a surprise Sunday morning when they found a bright red Audi TT parked in their living room. While the details of the crash are unknown, the video shows the TT lodged halfway into the side of a house after the car somehow drove through a hedge, launched in the air and drove over two parked cars.

From the angle of the accident shown on the BBC video, it appears the roads may have been snowy or ice and there was a berm behind the hedges, which apparently launched the car into the air helping it drive over a parked BMW 3 Series Coupe and an Audi A4 Avant. Reports indicate that the driver was in his 20s, and he suffered serious head injuries and was taken to the hospital in critical condition; there were three people inside the house, but none of them were injured. The car belonged to the driver's father.

Scroll down for three videos showing the aftermath of the accident, and head over to BBC for that news report.

Lawmakers ask EPA to look into gas price increase as ethanol credits rise

e85 ethanol station

A pair of US lawmakers told the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that ethanol credits are leading to some deficits. Attempting to stem what they say could be an additional boost in gas prices prior to the busy summer-driving months, David Vitter (R-LA) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) are raising questions, Reuters reports.

In a letter to the EPA, the two senators say fuel suppliers are having a progressively harder time buying enough credits, or RINs (Renewable Identification Number), from renewable fuel producers to keep up with federal mandates.

Central to the issue is the fact that prices for RINs have jumped higher than Superman on his best day. They are now worth more than a dollar a gallon, up from one cent a gallon (!) in December. With ethanol accounting for about 10 percent of gasoline, the RIN price jump translates to a 10-cent-a gallon increase in gas prices. Average fuel prices are up about 40 cents a gallon compared to December, to about $3.70 a gallon, according to AAA.

Other senators from ethanol producing states say the jump in RIN prices has less to do with demand or stiffening biofuel mandates and may have more to do with speculators playing the RIN market. Recently, a 12-year-sentence was handed down to a fraudster misrepresenting biodiesel RIN credits.

Spy Shots: BMW 4 Series production coupe caught on commercial shoot

Despite filming at 2:00 AM and at an undisclosed location, BMW minders filming a commercial for the fast-approaching 4 Series coupe were unable to ward off the long lenses of spy photographers. The result, as you can see here, is our first-ever look at the production version of BMW's new coupe, completely uncovered.

The night shots may be a little bit grainy, but the fast-moving 4 Series still looks pretty good with its camo closeted, matching the svelte lines of the concept car we saw in Detroit this winter. Expect that the 4 coupe will come to market with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in 428i trim, and a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder in 435i spec.

Take your time looking through our gallery of movie-star 4 Series photographs, and tell us what you think about the uncovered Bimmer, in comments.

Official: 2013 Shelby 1000 unleashes its 1,200 horsepower ahead of NY show reveal

2013 Shelby 1000 Mustang - front three-quarter view, black

True story: Last fall, I had the opportunity to spend a week with Ford's new 2013 Shelby GT500 - the Blue Oval's factory Mustang with 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. It's an amazing beast, to be sure. I'm not sure if it was Michigan's damp streets strewn with potholes and wet leaves, but at no point did I ever say to myself, "You know, Ford is on to a really good thing here, but what it really needs is about twice the power." And yet, for people in warmer climes with infrastructure in better nick - or for those whose muscle cars live their lives out on the track, there's apparently sufficient demand to warrant just such a beast.

Quick studies will recall that Shelby American launched its 1000 last year to commemorate its 50th anniversary, but it is returning to the New York Auto Show with a fresh version based on the 2013 GT500 I drove. The 2013 Shelby 1000 whips up 1,200 horsepower on pump gas thanks to beefed-up forced induction, engine internals and cooling. Wisely, it also incorporates an adjustable suspension and big brake package to make sure those ponies have the best chance being safely deployed to the ground.

What price the world's most powerful "production" muscle car? $154,995 for starters - donor GT500 not included. What, no convertible variant?
