2014 Chevrolet Malibu: A Quickie Makeover for the Bow Tie’s Family Sedan

Chevrolet had high hopes when it introduced the redesigned 2013 Malibu at the 2011 New York auto show. On point for GM’s charge into the competitive mid-size sedan segment, the General was counting on the new bow-tie sedan to inflict some serious sales damage on opponents with names like Camry, Accord, and Fusion. Marquez leads damp first practice

Marc Marquez was fastest despite a late fall as MotoGP's Mugello weekend began with a damp free practice session. Heavy overnight rain meant it was only in the final few minutes that slicks could be used, and not all the frontrunners felt it was worth trying them. Marquez put his Honda on top by over a second for a while as he led progress towards competitive dry times, although his final 1m54.797s was still seven seconds down on last year's pole

New Pirellis won’t race in Canada

Pirelli's modified 2013-specification rear tyres will only be used in Friday practice at next week's Canadian Grand Prix, rather than for the whole weekend as originally hoped. A Pirelli spokesperson has confirmed to AUTOSPORT that the modified rubber, which will feature a 2012-style kevlar belt rather than the steel belt used in the current race tyres, will be evaluated during practice. Each team will be given two sets of the new-specification rubber for evaluation with a view to them being used as race tyres from the British Grand Prix at the end of June onwards.

I sold my Viper, but the memories I'll keep

The following is written by auto industry veteran Tom Kowaleski. The words are his own, but the memories now belong to everyone thanks to his willingness to share. If you're an industry veteran with a story to share, contact us at tipsATautoblogDOTcom.

It became the flame that started the fire of belief in the next life of Chrysler.

I just sold a car. Nothing new. Millions do it every day. But my car was a 1995 Dodge Viper, so maybe it was a bit more unique since just 12,000 were built. And like others selling a car that's been a part of the family for close to 20 years, this was a confluence of emotions for me. I was sad to see it go, but happy to have the cash and one less big, shiny, under-utilized object in my life.

Viper was a major part of my education in the automobile business. I worked at Chrysler in the '80s and '90s, and the Viper's development - indeed, its whole story - was critical to Chrysler's revitalization and comeback into credibility. The Viper program was done on a shoestring. It came to life as the result of four incredibly strong personalities agreeing on a single vision. It was a car no consumer research would ever support. It was a car one no one else would ever think of building. Yet, it became the flame that started the fire of belief in the next life of Chrysler.

The first time I laid eyes on the Viper, I was invited to join a final review session with Bob Lutz, the Vice Chairman of the company at the time; Francois Castaing, the new head of Engineering and recent AMC arrival; and Tom Gale, the head of Design and the most senior 'real' Chrysler person. The fourth member of the gang, the scalawag racing legend Carroll Shelby, was not in attendance.

Tom Kowaleski is a veteran of public relations. He has worked in senior positions at Chrysler, General Motors, BMW and currently Lincoln, making him one of the few industry insiders to have worked for each of Detroit's three automakers.

Quick Spin: 2013 Dinan S3 BMW 550i

Steve Dinan has been enhancing BMW models since 1979. But don't throw his company into the ring with the dozen or so other tuners who tweak, tinker and piggyback upgrades on the famed German marque. Dinan is a tuner, but it's also an engineering firm that writes its own software, builds its own parts and then backs everything it does with a factory-grade warranty. That sort of fastidiousness comes at a price, but most of its customers - including the powerhouse of BMW Motorsport - rely on Dinan to help them come out on top.

In stock form, BMW's 550i is a formidable four-door with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 rated at 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. While those figures allow it to run with quick company (0-60 in 5.0 seconds, according to the automaker), Dinan puts the sedan's kettle on full boil with its S3 package. Starting with the engine, the performance engineering firm bolts on larger turbochargers, air-to-water intercoolers, a trick strut tower brace cold air intake, a quad-pipe free flow exhaust and its own engine management software. Pump in some premium fuel, and the result is 542 horsepower and 587 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent through the stock eight-speed automatic to a limited slip rear differential (Dinan will upgrade xDrive all-wheel drive models, too).

The Dinan S3 also features and extensive suspension upgrade that includes new front camber arms and low compliance rear control arms (engineered to reduce understeer and improve turn-in). The stock dampers are retained, but new bump stops are installed along with new springs. Overall, the car rides about a half-inch lower than stock to improve roll rate. To reduce unsprung weight, forged 20-inch HRE Performance wheels are fitted at all four corners (wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires - 275/35ZR20 up front and 295/35ZR20 in the rear). Lastly, the company remaps the factory Electronic Damper Control (EDC) software with its own Dinan Shockware to work in conjunction with the new enhancements.

The base price of the 2013 BMW 550i is $62,625. Add another $38,773 for the full complement of Dinan upgrades on our test vehicle, and the BMW Performance carbon fiber body components. Expensive, but withhold your judgement until after you've stepped on the accelerator pedal.

Driving Notes:
  • Without a doubt, the Dinan engine package is the most seamless aftermarket upgrade I have ever experienced. The impressive increase in power is velvety smooth and natural in its delivery, devoid of the negative characteristics (hiccups, peaks and flat spots) that are common to most other tuned vehicles. The 550i lacks launch control, so the twin-turbo S3 requires a delicate right foot, or the rear tires quickly liquefy. Drive it properly, with a light touch followed by heavy throttle a few feet off the line, and the sedan takes off like a missile - quickly embossing your spine into the leather seatback. The smooth ZF eight-speed shifts with authority, yet without any of the harshness normally found with a dual-clutch. Dinan doesn't publish acceleration figures, but my tuned derrière dyno says it slices upwards of a second off BMW's published 550i time to 60 mph... and it runs unrestricted to over 190 mph.
  • Dinan touts its S3 550i as "a more luxurious version of the M5" with softer shocks and active roll control that give its car the edge when it comes to ride quality. They aren't fibbing, as the enhanced 5 Series provides a very comfortable ride when the EDC is set in Comfort, and sharp response when configured in Sport and Sport Plus. There is less understeer, thanks to the new camber and control arms, and nothing seemed to unsettle the chassis. The stock adaptive suspension worked seamlessly with the physical and software upgrades - the wide range of suspension settings was impressive.
  • If asked what I didn't like about the augmented 5 Series, I'd have to mention the steering. Three years ago, when I reviewed the BMW 550i, I commended the steering's accuracy but complained about its numbness and isolation. That said, Dinan doesn't touch the electric steering, so don't expect it to be improved. Again, this is more of a wish for improvement than a deal breaker.
  • Dinan's superb S3 BMW 550i obviously competes nearly directly with the factory's own flagship M5. In terms of power output, the Dinan feels every bit as burly as the 2013 M5 (keep in mind that BMW boosted performance of its M5 for the 2014 model year with the optional Competition Package), but its personality is softer and bit more tame - less high strung would be another good description. Both are excellent examples of the 5 Series. However, if asked which one I prefer, I'd select the hardened M5 for competitive track events but choose the polished Dinan as my daily driver. Where do you spend more of your time?

Ferrari sure Monaco slump a one-off

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali is confident his team will bounce back from a poor Monaco Grand Prix weekend. Fernando Alonso could only finish seventh after being overtaken by both Adrian Sutil and Jenson Button during the race, while team-mate Felipe Massa started at the back after a practice crash kept him out of qualifying and hit the wall in the race due to a suspension failure. Domenicali stressed that, while Ferrari won the previous race in Spain, its Monaco struggles do not represent a slump any more than its performance at Barcelona proved the team was dominant.

Official: GMC SIerra Denali is ready to live the high life

Between the information for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado High Country and the accidently leaked picture on GMC's consumer site, it didn't take much imagination to envision what the 2014 GMC Sierra Denali would be like. But here it is. Going on sale this fall, the 2014 Sierra Denali will continue to be the most luxurious pickup truck in the General Motors portfolio, while getting more power and technology than ever before.

Like previous models, the 2014 Sierra Denali stands out from lower Sierra models with a big cheese-grater chrome grille, 20-inch chrome wheels and body-color bumpers. Inside, the Denali gets plenty of leather with contrasting stitching, but this is where GMC really steps up from the Silverado High Country with real aluminum trim and a new customizable eight-inch driver display in the gauge cluster. Standard features will include heated and cooled front bucket seats, the Intellilink infotainment system with Bose audio, while the options list offers a Driver Alert Package (with forward collision alert and lane departure warning), a rear-seat entertainment system and a Z71 Off-Road Package.

As for power, the standard engine will be the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 with its 355 horsepower, and the optional engine will be the new 6.2-liter V8. Although official power figures for the bigger engine aren't in yet, GM is finally putting some estimates on paper expecting around 420 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque to go with a 12,000-pound towing capacity. The new Sierra Denali will be available in either two- or four-wheel drive. Scroll down for more details listed in the official press release.

Report: Lewis Hamilton jet ski prank causes camera damage

Lewis Hamilton

That zany Lewis Hamilton is up to some hijinks once again, recently hamming it up on a pair of jet skis for a television film crew in Monaco with fellow Formula One driver Nico Rosberg. The F1 drivers were supposed to stay far enough away from the camera operators on a stationary boat, but Hamilton came in close, executed a sharp turn and sprayed the whole crowd with water. Early reports said the stunt did $150,000 in damage to cameras and mobile phones, but Mercedes said that wasn't the case.

A source with the company said one freelancer didn't adequately protect his gear. The race team is helping to repair or replace the damaged equipment as a gesture of good faith.

Mercedes rules out playing team tactics

Mercedes Formula 1 team boss Ross Brawn has ruled out using one of his drivers as a sacrificial lamb in the Monaco Grand Prix to try to guarantee his outfit victory. With Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton securing the front row in Monte Carlo, the team could boost its chances of a win by using one of the drivers to hold the rest of the field up while the other is allowed to break free at the front

Aston Martin shadowy teaser - video screencap

Aston Martin has released a short teaser video entitled Coming Soon that features the image above near its close. Based on the profile and the hood intakes, the short money is on this being the V12 Vantage S, since the standard model has yet to earn the addition of the 19th letter of the alphabet. It looks like there might also be a new roof treatment on the car in the video, but that could merely be a trick of the light.

It probably won't be long before we get another teaser or the genuine article revealed. For now, there's the video below provided for your sleuthing.

Why Adam Carolla doesn't drive his fancy cars on the street

Comedian Adam Carolla is a very unique car collector, especially when compared to some of his peers. Those other well-known "Hollywood" automotive enthusiasts, who include Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld, are often spotted on public roads driving priceless cars from their private collections. But not Carolla.

Two years ago, when we visited Carolla's Southern California home, we were awestruck by his pristine Datsun Camel GT pace car, Bob Sharp Racing IMSA 300ZX and his custom Datsun Roadster 1600. In another corner, we took cloth covers off a gorgeous 1967 Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 and a Lamborghini Miura.

While most of us would jump at the opportunity to tool around in any one of those classics, Carolla recently told eBay Motors that he has no interest in mimicking fellow stars like Leno. He doesn't relish the attention expensive machinery garners, and there is always the chance something is going to break. Even worse, the accomplished vintage racer said that the streets of Los Angeles are chock full of cops - that takes all of the fun out of nailing an apex at speed.

So Carolla's collection will remain, in perfect condition, stored for his own admiration. His daily commute, grocery errands and trips to the studio will be run in standard production vehicles - they draw fewer eyes. Don't ask him to change, either, or he'll give you something to think about: "Does anyone ask a stamp collector if he uses his stamps to mail in his gas bill?"

Why Adam Carolla doesn't drive his fancy cars on the street originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 26 May 2013 13:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Boldrin and Leonetti Conquer the Draft

The inRacing News Challenge multi-class series headed into NASCAR territory for some classic draft racing at Charlotte, North Carolina in Week Three.  Charlotte Motor Speedway’s 2.25 mile road layout is the closest road racers will get to oval racing as running in packs is not only encouraged but required. Last week at Summit Point new names moved up the leader board as several iRNC regulars disappeared and this week is no different.  In the Solstice series a new name took top honors while in Mazda there is a new overall leader. Pontiac Solstice Ilham Halabi (Asia) started the week off with a quick lap of 1:21.442 which was second best for the week.  He raced five times at Charlotte winning three and averaged 138 points which is also second place [...]

Prost sees no need to change F1

Alain Prost believes Formula 1 should be celebrating the fact that the outcome of races is so uncertain now, rather than get drawn into criticisms of the show. F1 has faced a barrage of complaints this year - from both competitors and fans – that its quest to deliver entertainment has gone too far. Prost, who is in Monaco this weekend in his role as an ambassador for Renault, thinks it is too easy for people to hit out at the way races are playing out rather than stepping back and looking at the positives.

Official: Need For Speed Rivals announced for Xbox One and Playstation 4 [w/video]

Fresh from critical praise for the last installment in the series, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Electronic Arts has formally announced that Need For Speed Rivals will be the next title in the series. Set to hit stores on November 19, the game will also be the first Need For Speed to be available on next-generation consoles Xbox One and Playstation 4, as well as the current Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

The "rivals" in question for this NFS title are, of course, cops and street racers - nothing new there - but the gameplay is apparently getting a makeover. Players may choose to be racers, and live the life of evading cops, gaining infamy, videoing their slipperiest moves and earning Speed Points. They might also choose to play on the side of law enforcement; attaining higher ranks and faster police cars with more and increasingly challenging busts.

One big innovation in Rivals will be the use of a new play system called AllDrive. The concept is that a player can seamlessly move from playing in single player mode, to playing online with friends, without having to wait in a lobby or move through a menu interface. The game will merge one's play from single to multiplayer as your friends across the web go on and offline, and you can choose to interact with them or not, as you like.

One more item of note: Ferrari will be making its return to the NFS world in Rivals. The following press release mentions that the game has booked Ferrari for this new title, specifically calling out the F12 Berlinetta as being invited to the party. Continue on below for the official press release, as well as a short video teaser of the new game.
