2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i Long-Term Test Intro: 40,000 Miles in the Cheapest BMW

By now, we all know that everyone is supposed to be driving smaller vehicles. But we’re not doing a very good job of it. At almost every redesign, cars and trucks gain size, mass, or both. Even the smallest vehicles often get bigger when redesigned, creating a cycle whereby the bottom slot opens up, ready [...]

Spy Shots: Next Kia Sedona minivan spied

After skipping the 2013 model year and returning for 2014, the Kia Sedona is getting a full redesign for 2015, which we see for the first time in these new spy shots. The new Sedona isn't going to look as much like the 2011 KV7 Concept as we had hoped, but we definitely see some key styling cues from the Kia concept minivan.

Even though it's covered in heavy camouflage, we can see that some of the KV7's cues on the 2015 Sedona include the vertical front marker lights, the horizontal taillights and the pinched beltline starting at the C-pillar. Kia's trademark Tiger Nose grille is present and accounted for, as is the telltale dip in the windshield.

All in all, the next-gen Sedona already looks to be a significant improvement over the current, generally boring model, which dates back to 2006 and has a striking resemblance to the Ford Freestar. There is no word yet as to what will power the 2015 Sedona, but our spy shooter said that this prototype was most likely powered by a 2.2-liter diesel.

Official: Audi first to bring LTE to the car later this year

It appears Audi will be the first to market with in-car LTE service later this year. We knew that BMW was working on LTE integration last year with its ConnectedDrive, and we've been told that, by the end of 2015, most General Motors products will have it, but LTE can be ordered on the S3 Sportback (pictured) as soon as July. Other models in the A3 line-up will add the option in November.

Inserting an LTE-enabled SIM card into the Audi's MMI navigation will make the S3 a WLAN hotspot that can quickly shuffle high-definition content from the cloud to the cockpit. It will also bolster Audi Connect services like Google Earth, Facebook and Twitter, e-mail, and streaming internet radio.

We've been told that we'll be offered the LTE option when the 2015 A3 sedan gets here in the spring of 2014. Since the service requires you to provide a SIM card, we expect that costs and data caps will be a matter between you and the service provider; speaking of which, Audi hasn't announced yet who that provider will be on this side of the Atlantic. The press release below has more details.

Mercedes believes title battle wide open

Mercedes believes that the world championship battle has been blown open after Lewis Hamilton's victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton's dominance at the hot Hungaroring pointed to Mercedes having made a big breakthrough in its understanding of the tyres, which might have also been helped by the new Pirelli construction suiting its car better. Although team principal Ross Brawn would not go as far as declaring that the outfit's tyre woes were now a thing of the past, he does think that the potential was there for it to pull off similar performances in the races to come

Official: Ford shows off V8-powered Ranger headed to Dakar Rally

Avert your eyes now if you're jealous that the global version of the Ford Ranger is not offered in the US. Ford's midsize pickup is being tuned up to take on the 2014 Dakar Rally, and the result is a truck that is probably even cooler than any F-150 SVT Raptor we've ever seen in the States. Ford is actually building two versions of the truck for Dakar, which will run from January 5 through January 18, covering more than 5,000 miles from Argentina to Chile.

Starting with a fully composite body and a 5.0-liter V8 plucked from a Mustang, nearly every aspect of the trucks have been purpose built to take on the grueling race. This includes things like the six-speed sequential gearbox, liquid-cooled rear brakes and the 132-gallon fuel tank. As proof that Dakar is more about endurance than speed, the engines used in these race trucks will be limited to around 350 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, and will max out at a top speed of just 105 miles per hour. Scroll down for Ford's official press release offering more information about the trucks and teams being prepped for Dakar.

Mercedes: impact of new tyres unclear

Mercedes thinks it too early to say that Pirelli's new tyres have improved its title chances, following Lewis Hamilton's victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton produced the most convincing race performance from the Brackley-based team so far this season on a day when Mercedes appeared to have put its tyre woes to bed. One of the factors that is believed to have helped its form is that the new Pirelli front tyre is weaker on turn-in, which has helped balance out Mercedes' problems of overheating the rears

Sebastian Vettel - 3rd: "I would have loved the race to have been a bit longer, as it was fun with Kimi at the end. It's hard to pass on this track, I got close but I wasn't in the prime overtaking spot at that point; I was trying to set something up for the next corners, but it didn't work. The key issue in the race was when I got stuck behind Jenson, there's no one to blame for that, I lost more time than expected on the way into the first stop and we came out just behind him.

Palmer scores stunning Hungary win

Jolyon Palmer drove a brilliant race, taking full advantage of Carlin's superior tyre strategy, to score an emphatic GP2 win in Hungary. Making full use of his fresher rubber he pulled off a great move on Marcus Ericsson for the lead.

Russian toddler names car brands - video screencap

This Russian two year old is sharp as a tack when it comes to knowing her car brands. Over the course of this video, she names nearly every brand she passes; impressive when there are plenty of adults who don't know an Audi from a Nissan. Another thing that's clear from the video, Mazda, BMW (all in a row!) and Hyundai are pretty popular brands in this little automotive whiz-kid's neighborhood.

Check out the video below for nearly three and a half minutes of full-on "awwwwww" - it's a welcome dose of cute from the land whose car culture is too often associated with wacky and/or ghastly dashcam videos.

Lewis Hamilton admits he has begun to entertain thoughts of fighting for a second Formula 1 world championship following his breakthrough Hungarian GP triumph. Video: World's Most Expensive Motorcycle has frame made from gold

World's most expensive motorcycle?

This motorcycle embraces two very different dynamics. On the one hand, it's quite possibly the most expensive motorcycle ever built, with some experts speculating that the frame alone is worth $1 million. On the other hand, it looks old and beaten up, like a steampunk MadMax.

Designed by an extremely wealthy Turkish motorcycle fan, Tarhan Telli, the basics are include an 1801cc V-Twin with 125 horsepower, a six-speed transmission and a 700-pound curb weight. But what makes it special, aside from the frame that's made entirely from gold, is the artistry. As Motorcycle explains, Telli wanted high-end materials, like the gold, but wasn't looking for something shouty, opting for worn materials with interesting patinas. So, basically, he commissioned a bike with a frame made from gold, but didn't want it to be too loud, so he went to further lengths to obscure the gold finish. This may be the world's biggest humblebrag.

Telli has approached the Guinness Book of World Records to get his one-off creation certified as the world's most expensive motorcycle. He isn't revealing what it cost him to build, but if he spent a million bucks on the frame, we'd expect the entire bike might be a few times that. Scroll down for the video.

Valentino Rossi tearing it up on a motocross bike - video screencap

Valentino Rossi recently invited Supermoto World Champion Thomas Chareyre and road-racing icon Guy Martin to go dirtbiking at his private track - and, for the first time, let a film crew in to capture it all on video.

Talk about a home track advantage, Rossi says owning the course, which he bought near his home in Tavullia, Italy three years ago, was one of his childhood dreams. It's made of a thin layer of gravel on top of a concrete base, a dirtbike-friendly surface that promotes fat powerslides. As competitive as he is in the MotoGP series, the nine-time World Champion says that riding at his track in the countryside is all about having fun - he never goes alone, always with friends. Watch the professional riders tearing it up in the video below.

Aaro Vainio completed a lights-to-flag victory in the opening GP3 race in Hungary. The Korainen racer made a good start, keeping ART's Conor Daly behind through the first corner. Over the next half a dozen laps he stretched the lead to over 2.5 seconds, before Daly started to reel him in.

Red Bull dominance surprises Vettel

Sebastian Vettel admitted he was surprised by how strong his Red Bull team was during practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Jay Leno's Garage with 1948 Tucker Sedan screencap

The story of the Tucker Car Corporation is a tragic one. Its sole model, the 1948 Tucker Sedan, had a huge number of innovations, with a particular focus on passenger safety, but a catastrophic debut and the ensuing media firestorm it created caused severe problems for the brand. Other issues followed, with an SEC investigation and rumors of troublemaking on the part of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.

Only 51 Tuckers were completed before the company went bust, making the three-eyed sedans some of the rarest American cars ever produced. With a unique, tail, complete with six exhaust pipes, a Tucker went for $2.915 million at a 2012 auction.

Martyn Donaldson takes Jay Leno's Garage through a brief tour of his Tucker, chassis number 1003, explaining just what was so innovative about these vehicles, along with what drew him to the rare cars in the first place. Scroll down for the full video.

Official: 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel gets 9,200-pound tow rating

The current-generation Ram 1500 is entering its fifth year on the market, but Ram's half-ton truck is not showing its age whatsoever. While we continue to wait for the fuel economy figures for the all-new EcoDiesel V6, Ram has released towing figures for trucks equipped with this new engine, as well as models fitted with the upgraded gasoline-powered V6.

The EcoDiesel - a $2,850 option - will help the Ram compete with V8-powered trucks with its max towing capacity of 9,200 pounds, which is just 50 pounds shy of the 2013 Ram 1500 with the 5.7-liter V8. The true benefit here is that the diesel should return impressive fuel economy in the process, and even though official estimates have yet to be released, Chrysler has promised that it will achieve more than 25 miles per gallon on the highway.

But even with the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6, upgrades to the eight-speed automatic transmission have resulted in an increase in towing capacity, now up to 7,450 pounds. This number is expected to be best in class for base-engine trucks.

Mitsubishi working on 500-horsepower hybrid Evo?

Until reality sets in, we'll settle for this report about Mitsubishi building what can only be described as one super plug-in hybrid. The Japanese automaker, per UK's Autocar, is working on a version of the Lancer Evolution that would take on the Nissan GT-R.

Specifically, Autocar, citing what it says are "highly placed Mitsubishi executives," says the PHEV would pair a 2.0-liter gas engine with two 80-horsepower electric motors to provide an awfully impressive 500 horsepower along with fuel economy of 150 miles per gallon (per the more lenient European driving cycle) and an all-electric driving range of as many as 40 miles.

Mitsubishi would use some of the technology employed in the MiEV Evolution II plug-in that raced at Pikes Peak this year, and while we don't think it'll look quite like that car (pictured above), we can dream a bit. Remaining an issue for Mitsubishi plug-ins, car execs say, is the continued lack of consensus on a fast-charging standard in the US, as Mitsubishi and Nissan continue to push for the CHAdeMO standard while US and European automakers bang the drum for the so-called SAE/"combo" fast-charging standard.

Vettel fastest as young driver test ends

Sebastian Vettel topped the final day of the young driver test, setting the fastest time of the three days of running at Silverstone. The triple world champion took over the Red Bull from junior driver Carlos Sainz Jr for the afternoon, packing in 78 laps while evaluating the new Pirelli tyres which will be used from next weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix onwards. Force India driver Adrian Sutil's fastest time of the morning was good enough to end the day second fastest, three-and-a-half tenths slower than Vettel.

2014 Audi R8 dealer courtesy car - video screencap

One of the worst parts about going to a dealership is sitting around waiting for the courtesy shuttle to show up and transport a group of strangers to their places of work or homes. Well, Audi of Canada found a nice way to surprise customers who brought their out-of-warranty vehicles in for a scheduled Health Check by replacing dealer's normal shuttle with a 2014 Audi R8 V10.

The R8, painted to resemble a safety car or police car, gave the customers a ride home - even stopping at a coffee shop along the way. Needless to say, the stunt got plenty of attention from passers-by and was quite a hit with the Audi customers, too. Scroll down to watch video of the customers getting the ride of a lifetime, which we're sure left some of the in-warranty customers at least a little jealous as they drove off in dealer loaner cars.
