Official: Mopar '13 Dart will roll into Chicago next week

We think this officially counts as a tradition. Every year going back to 2010, Mopar has rolled out a limited edition version of a popular product from the Chrysler Group portfolio. First it was the Mopar '10 Challenger, then the Mopar '11 Charger, then last year's Mopar '12 300, and this year it will be the Mopar '13 Dart, which will make its official world debut next week at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

Limited in number to just 500 units, the Mopar '13 Dart is no mere appearance package, though the demeanor of the Dart will be murdered out with a gloss black finish, gloss black 18-inch wheels, a set of Mopar blue stripes and a mean-looking Mopar ground effects kit. Likewise, the interior is touched up with leather seats (a blue one for the driver and black hides for the passengers), gloss black and black chrome trim, blue accent stitching, a sport pedal kit and other Mopar interior accessories.

Turning our attention back to the mechanical bits, the Mopar '13 Dart comes with the car's most powerful engine, a turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir four (shared with Fiat 500 Abarth) that's paired with a manual transmission. Those big, black wheels get wrapped in low profile 225/40R18 performance tires, and keeping everything in check is an upgraded brake kit with slotted rotors. The steering has also been calibrated for performance, the suspension lowered seven millimeters, and the exhaust tuned for better engine breathing.

But no, dear customer, that's not all. The Mopar '13 Dart also gets Chrysler's wireless smartphone charging technology, and those 500 lucky souls who bring one home will receive a "personalized owner kit" in a custom black case that includes a personalized plate with vehicle specs, a unique number ID for their car and a limited edition sketch of the car signed by its designer, among other tchotchkes. Production for the Mopar '13 Dart will begin this spring at the company's plant in Belvidere, IL.

Now we're wondering what vehicle Mopar will lay its hands upon next year. Any guesses?

Binder Celebrates Sixth Consecutive iSCS Championship

With four weeks remaining in the iRacing.com Sprint Car Series, time was running out for those jockeying for position in the points chase. Defending champion Alan Binder was still on top, over 100 points separating himself and second place; a safe margin by all standards. However, with four drop weeks available for those that race the full season, the separation between gold, silver, and bronze was still to be decided. Could Binder break even more ground in the iRacing record books by winning his sixth championship in a row? Week 9 featured a stop at the famous half-mile oval of New Smyrna Speedway. Always a track tough to tame for sprint regulars, six official races took place during the week after Christmas. After grabbing the fastest qualifying time, Binder followed [...]

Video: Biker blocks freeway to propose marriage in middle of road

There aren't quite words to contain our exasperation with stunts like this. Mere days after we watched a gaggle of jokers shut down an Orange County Oakland freeway for the sole purpose of doing donuts in the middle of the road, Hector "Tank" Martinez managed to talk some 300 motorcycle riders into helping him bring Interstate 10 in Los Angeles to a standstill. While Martinez used the moment as an excuse to execute a burnout of his own, his larger purpose was to get down on one knee in the middle lane and propose to his girlfriend, Paige Hernandez.

While we're all for romance, something tells us the magic would have been broken pretty quickly had the group been rear ended by an inattentive truck driver. We're not asking much, people. Just do us a favor and think past your own selfish ends. Or, more pointedly, just think. Watch the stupidity in the video below.

Cardion reveals its first CRT machine

Cardion AB has revealed the Aprilia ART with which it will contest the CRT class of this year's MotoGP championship. The team had run a satellite Ducati since stepping into the premier class in 2011, but as AUTOSPORT reported back in September it elected to switch into CRTs for the forthcoming season. Czech rider Karel Abraham, who suffered a frustrating, injury-laden 2012 , will once again lead the single-bike effort.

Official: Ford nets $5.7B in 2012, $1.6B in fourth quarter

Ford Grille

Ford brought in $5.7 billion in net income during 2012, which is around $307 million less than one year prior. Even so, the automaker closed out 2012 with the highest pre-tax profit for a single quarter in nearly 10 years, earning $1.7 billion in the fourth quarter thanks largely to a higher-than-average truck mix in the US. That's a jump of $577 million over 2011. Likewise, that translated into fourth quarter income of $1.6 billion. All told, Ford set a full-year pre-tax profit record in 2012. But that doesn't necessarily mean everything is rosy in the land of the Blue Oval.

Like every other manufacturer, 2012 saw Ford get hammered in the European Union, where a deep economic recession continues to drive down consumer confidence. The automaker lost more than $700 million in Europe, and saw full revenue of $26.6 billion in 2012. That's a decline of $7.2 billion compared to last yea. Ford says the market for new vehicles in Europe has contracted to 13.5 million units, the lowest number in 17 years. You can read the full press release below for more information.

Pirelli ‘ready’ for new F1 contract

Pirelli says it is 'ready' to extend its contract with Formula 1 beyond this year, even though there remains the chance that the matter could go out to tender. The Italian tyre manufacturer is pleased with the way the two seasons since its F1 return have gone , and it is excited about its plans for 2013. Its contract comes to an end later this year, however, and the company is not yet in a position to make firm plans for 2014.

At first glance, it might appear that F1 driver-turned iRacing director of partner relations Divina Galica is virtually alone when it comes to the distaff side of iRacing.  Not so.  While the overwhelming majority of iRacers are men, scores of women compete on the service . . . none more enthusiastically than Leila Wilson. Fully embracing the challenge of online racing, this self-described “crazy Californian chick” has gravitated to the rough & tumble world of Silver Crown and Sprint Cars, having placed in the top 20 overall in both the iRacing Silver Crown and Sprint Cars series in the past two seasons.  Nor is Wilson limited to Sprints and Silver Crown, witness a Tour Modified win and podium finish in Late Model in 2012 S4 and Mazda MX-5 road course [...]

Analysis: F1′s tech boss silly season

The attention of Formula 1 fans and media may have been focused pretty much entirely on developments at Mercedes this week, but behind the scenes the ramifications of its shake-up are only just starting to reverberate around the grid. The F1 business is a fairly small community, with only a finite number of top-class technical talents available to be shared among the top teams. It means that if a technical director from Team A is poached by Team B, then Team A has to react swiftly and either promote from within or go off and poach Team C's top man.

Video: Hyundai shows us two more Super Bowl commercials

Hyundai is gearing up to show five commercials during this year's Super Bowl, and you've probably already seen one of them called Don't Tell that's been airing on television for weeks now. The Korean automaker has released two of the other four ads, though it looks like it might keep the headlining ad for the three-row Santa Fe, called Epic PlayDate, under wraps until the big game.

Of the two ads published on YouTube, we like Stuck the most, which features the Sonata Turbo. It presents all of the horrid things you could be stuck behind on the highway as reason enough for buying a boosted Sonata with its ample passing power.

The other commercial, called Excited, features the 2013 Hyundai Genesis. Our funny bone didn't tingle much with this one, and it contains a grammar bugaboo that's a pet peeve of some editors in the Autoblog virtual offices. Can you spot it? Scroll below to take the challenge and let us know in the comments.

Report: Nissan Leaf Nismo headed for production, spec-race series canned?

Nissan Leaf Nismo concept on display at Tokyo Motor Show

Remember the Nismo Leaf Nismo Concept show at the Tokyo Motor Show more than a year ago? To refresh your memory, it was a Nissan Leaf gussied up with an aerodynamic body kit, new wheels and a few cosmetic enhancements inside the cabin - the motor and powertrain remain unchanged. In any case, it appears that the green vehicle has received the green light for limited production.

Nismo chief Shoichi Miyatani has reportedly confirmed to Autocar that the zippier-looking electric Nissan will head down the assembly line in Japan this summer. But instead of a world-wide launch, the five-door will be sold only in the automaker's domestic market until consumer reaction is gauged. Even then, such low volumes will hardly justify expanding to other markets, Miyatani added.

In other news, it appears that the Leaf RC race car program - hinted as a one-make race series - is probably not going to happen.

Report: Hyundai and Kia set aside $412 million for false mileage claims

We still don't know how the whole fuel economy ratings debacle is going to play out for Hyundai and Kia, but both automakers are preparing to make good on their promises to reimburse vehicle owners for lower-than-promised mileage figures. According to Automotive News, Hyundai and Kia have set aside a combined total of $412 million ($225 million for Hyundai and $187 million for Kia) as compensation, which will be sent out on a case-by-case basis via debit cards depending on the vehicle and the mileage driven.

Announced back in November, the exaggerated miles per gallon claims affect around 900,000 Kia and Hyundai products produced for the 2011 through 2013 model years sold in the US and Canada. This whole deal has had plenty of action ranging from suspected whistleblowing from a rival US automaker and even insider trading, but it has probably been most frustrating for vehicle owners who, in most cases, saw their vehicles' city and highway ratings drop between one and three digits.

Official: BMW, Toyota outline new tech joint venture, new sports car

Toyota and BMW execs sign tech joint venture

Back in June, Toyota and BMW announced a "memorandum of understanding" outlining plans for the two companies to join forces on future products and technology development. On Thursday, they signed a more formal and binding agreement that goes further into detail about the partnership, and it all sounds pretty exciting. The two announced they will work together in four main areas:
  1. Joint development of a fuel cell system
  2. "Set up a feasibility study to define a joint platform concept for a mid-size sports vehicle"
  3. Focus on lightweight technology - the agreement mentions reinforced composites that could be used in the aforementioned sports vehicle
  4. Better batteries - the companies will work to develop a lithium-air battery with a much greater energy density than today's cells.
The most intriguing item is the mention of a "mid-size sports vehicle." The vague term had us wondering what, exactly, is meant by "sports vehicle," but we're being assured this feasibility study is centered on a sports car. Is this the first step toward a Supra revival?

Despite our fervor for all things sports car, however, fuel cell research could prove to be the pact's most important point. Both companies have built advanced fuel research vehicles, with Toyota favoring fuel cells and BMW leaning toward hydrogen-powered, internal combustion. The press release specifically lists fuel cell stacks, hydrogen tanks, motors and batteries as areas of interest. If the two can eventually bring a fuel-cell vehicle to market at an affordable price point, it would be huge news, although there's always the problem of infrastructure to support such cars. BMW and Toyota's new deal can't solve everything though, right? Read the full press release below for more information.

IndyCar keeps engine-change penalty

IndyCar's engine-change penalty system will remain in place for the 2013 season, despite moves to change it. With the return of manufacturer rivalry under the new-for-2012 technical package, IndyCar ruled that drivers exceeding the five-engines-per-season limit or changing engines before the minimum mileage threshold must take 10-place grid penalties. This led to a large number of penalties through the year, most notably in Long Beach , where all Chevrolet-powered cars needed precautionary engine switches.

WTCC equalises cars’ base weights

The FIA Touring Car Committee has announced that all cars participating in the 2013 World Touring Car Championship will run at the same minimum weight of 1150 kilos, including the driver. In order to achieve weight equalisation between different machinery, the weight of the BMW 320TC and Chevrolet Cruze 1.6T models has been reduced by 10 kilos. Ed Carpenter Racing team manager Tim Broyles is optimistic that the experience gained during 2012 will help the fledgling squad to build upon its Fontana win in the new IndyCar season. Carpenter left Sarah Fisher Racing to set up his own team at the end of 2011, becoming the only owner-driver in the field, and delivered a surprise victory in last year's season-finale.
