Phillip Island Success Sends Huttu Clear

In an action-packed 69 laps around the virtual Philip Island, Greger Huttu steered his Williams-Toyota FW31 to the top step of the podium, claiming maximum points in Round Five of the iRacing.com World Championship Grand Prix Series. With the demise of erstwhile rival Hugo Luis in the opening stages, the reigning champion now heads the standings table by 45 points. Starting from pole position with a lap time of 1:07.445, Huttu’s getaway from the line kept the Finn at the front of the pack, with My3id‘s Luis following closely behind. Setting a blistering pace, Huttu was already nearly a second clear of Luis by the end of the opening lap, and was soon to be handed a massive advantage. The first incident to aid Huttu’s progress involved his Redline team-mate [...]

Mercedes to bide time over leadership

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff says he is now happy to bide his time over any further management tweaks after his team's successful start to the 2013 Formula 1 campaign. Da Costa sent to the back of grid

Antonio Felix da Costa has been put to the back of the grid for the first Formula Renault 3.5 race at Aragon after his car ran out of fuel in qualifying. The Red Bull junior stopped on track following the chequered flag, and was unable to get his car back to the pits after setting the third fastest time in the session. Just like in Formula 1, FR3.5 rules require teams to be able to produce a fuel sample from a car after qualifying.

Official: Honda signs on as Pikes Peak sponsor, race participant

Honda plans to storm the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 30, entering ten cars in nine classes at the race to the sky, and signing on as a corporate sponsor. Part of the company's return to grassroots racing - if that's what you can call factory-backed efforts - the banners of Honda R&D and Honda North America will fly on these entries: a first-gen Acura NSX, an Acura TL SH-AWD, Honda CR-Z, Honda Fit EV, one CRF450R and two CRF250R motorcycles, a CBR1000RR motorcycle and a TRX450 ATV.

One more entry, details of which are to be announced later, will be driven by IndyCar pilot Simon Pagenaud of Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports. LoveFab (pictured above during practice last year) will be there with its new, NSX-based Enviate, but as a privateer entry.

Honda's been to the mountain before, with high-powered gear in 2012 and record-setting EVs in 1994 and 1999, but it's never made noise like this. Have a read of the press release below for more info.

2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI - front three-quarter view, in motion

North American car buyers get a bit of a slap in the face when it comes to delivery schedules for new the Volkswagen Golf and pumped-up GTI models. We'll just repeat the old chestnut: It's worth the wait... even though it still stinks. This time around, Western Europe is taking deliveries of the new Golf as we speak, and GTI deliveries start between May and July. North America doesn't get the Mk7 Golf or GTI until about July of 2014.

So we approached our first drive of the new GTI with this chip on our shoulder: "You're making us wait? Well, then at least give us the exact car we'll be able to buy. No compromises, mein freund." And so it was that we extracted nearly all of our drive impressions from behind the wheel of what, for the United States, will technically be a model year 2015 two-door Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance with the standard six-speed manual.

This time around, Volkswagen in Wolfsburg and in Herndon, VA, explain the wait in very practical terms. Whereas before it was just a long wait while Volkswagen slowly realized it needed to properly invest in North America, the wait this time is because VW needs to get its Puebla, Mexico, factory completely on-line to build all of North America's Golfs and GTIs. The deadline for this happening is... July 2014. We're still gonna whine about it though, because that's how we roll.

Hamilton: Mercedes needs cool weather

Lewis Hamilton believes that the cooler conditions of upcoming races in Europe will suit Mercedes, after the team struggled to look after its tyres in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn had said before the Sakhir event that if his outfit performed well in Bahrain then it would be quick everywhere because it was a track where it had struggled in 2012. Red Bull still wants Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli to change its tyres for the remainder of the season, even though it triumphed at the Bahrain Grand Prix . Bahrain race quotes: Red Bull

Sebastian Vettel - 1st: "It was good fun at the beginning with some very tight wheel to wheel racing. At the start you don't know if you will be quick or not, as everyone is a bit all over the place, including yourself! It's important to get to the front; we saw at the last race that if you get stuck behind someone then it does have an impact on tyre wear and today it was important to make use of the tyres we had saved from qualifying yesterday. I love to be in clean air, so I was pushing hard to get into the lead and, with the speed we had mid-race, it was quite comfortable today

Goke Delivers at Michigan

The last 30 laps of the 2013 ISOWC Michigan 400 lived up to reputation, by delivering it all. Excitement, confusion, drama, and high emotions. Who could expect less from the track where over the two years previous, no driver could be certain of their finishing position until the last corner of the last lap? The first 345 miles of the 400 mile race went without caution, beating the series record of 309.8 miles set in 2012 at Twin Ring Motegi, and becoming only the third race in series history to go green for more than 300 miles. To say that it wasn’t eventful however would be a lie, as drivers had to get the job done over three rounds of pit stops, separating and bringing the field together over numerous [...]

Teased: Renault offers shadowy glimpse of F1-influenced electric car concept

Renault mystery F1 EV teaser

Well, what have we here? Truth be told, we're not entirely sure. The teaser image above comes from Renault, and its contents are about as opaque as the message with which it arrives:

"This prototype vehicle, which features muscular styling and impressive performance credentials, provides a bridge between the world of Formula One and that of electric vehicles. It's a concept car that will make a lot of noise... but, in total silence."

So, the gist is that Renault is readying an EV concept influenced by F1. Beyond that, and the picture above displaying some of the car's electric drivetrain, we don't have much to go on. Fortunately, we won't have to wait long to find out what they are up to - the unnamed concept will be revealed in two days' time, on Thursday, April 25 at the company's plant in Valladolid, Spain.

Video: Is NASCAR green? New ad makes the case

If you're a motorsports fan you've probably come across stories on the efforts Formula One has made to reduce its carbon footprint (KERS anyone?), but you might not have heard about what's being done in the world of NASCAR. Turns out it's pretty intense.

In 2008, NASCAR chairman Brian France got to work on creating a green initiative for the series. It wasn't unveiled until 2009 and it tackled the integration of biofuels, as in the switch to E85, employing alternative energy like the solar array at Pocono Raceway, and recycling. The initiative has a "managing director of green innovation," Dr. Mike Lynch, a website with ways everyone can get involved in making the Earth greener, hybrid pace cars and Miss Sprint Cup in a green race suit.

It's gotten bigger every year, and NASCAR will crank up its promotion with a 30-second spot that ran several times during the STP 400 at the Kansas Speedway. You can watch it below.

Fernando Alonso - 3rd: "It's really good news that once again we managed to do well in qualifying, which is our Achilles Heel! This is now the third time this year that we end up in the top three and, even if usually Sunday goes better thanks to our race pace, I am really pleased to see our potential already maximized on Saturday. The data seen from Friday's long runs means we can be optimistic about a race in which our main adversaries are represented by Vettel and the Red Bull in front and the Lotuses which might be behind us on the grid, but they will definitely be in the game. Because of the penalties for Hamilton and Webber, Felipe will start from fourth: I think it's much better that I find myself alongside my team-mate's Ferrari than Lewis' Mercedes! We won't discover which is the best strategy until tomorrow and it's impossible to make predictions
