Meeke secures works drive for Finland

Kris Meeke will return to a factory World Rally Championship seat in Finland to stand in for Khalid Al Qassimi at Citroen next month. Al Qassimi has to miss the event due to business commitments, leaving a vacancy in the car Citroen runs under the Abu Dhabi banner. Meeke, the 2009 Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion, has not had a top WRC seat since the Prodrive Mini programme was cut back at the end of 2011

Ricciardo: sixth no boost to RBR chances

Daniel Ricciardo does not believe qualifying sixth for the British Grand Prix will make a significant difference to his chances of landing a Red Bull seat. The Australian is on Red Bull's shortlist to replace Porsche-bound Mark Webber, along with Scuderia Toro Rosso team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne and Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen. While he is sure that his qualifying performance will have been noticed, he insists that a strong race result will be more important to his hopes of succeeding Webber

What’s the Point?

As I’ve said multiple times, the goal of everyone at the Golden Gate Racing team this year is the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Championship. So after winning three straight races, and gaining the points lead by rebounding from an 18 points deficit after the second race, we felt it was time to start points racing, and being a little more conservative. The biggest points race we have all year is Sonoma. Generally with 30+ cars showing up, and the majority of them racing only the one event, the race can get tricky — and nerve-wracking for any driver competing for the championship. We came in to the race weekend with more momentum than ever and a lot of practice time at the track on iRacing, where I could even [...]

Spy Shots: Bug-eyed next-gen Nissan Titan spied testing

Nissan Titan spy shots

It's no secret that the fullsize pickup truck market is dominated by offerings from Detroit's Big Three automakers, the Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra not able to outdo the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 or Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra twins. A great deal of that has to do with the fact that, while the American trucks have all undergone evolutionary updates that include a range of body styles, fuel-efficient engines and excellent technology, the Japanese offerings are, well, really old. Toyota is offering an updated Tundra for the 2014 model year, and while we haven't driven it yet, we're already betting that it's still behind the pack in terms of competitiveness - the 2013 model placed fifth out of sixth in a recent PickupTrucks.com comparison test.

At the bottom of the pack lies the Nissan Titan, a truck that hasn't received any sort of substantial update since its introduction nearly ten years ago. But that's going to change - a new truck is slated to debut for the 2015 model year, and these spy shots of a Titan mule clearly show that things are moving forward.

While this tester relies heavily on the current truck's bodywork for testing purposes, the new Titan will have a revised design, some of which is evidenced by the bug-eyed front fascia of this mule. No, the production model isn't going to look all weird (we hope), but the higher, more outboard headlight placement suggests that the new truck will be a bit wider than the current model.

Earlier reports have suggested that the new Titan will offer an increased range of powertrains and bodystyles, including, for the first time, a Regular Cab option. In addition to V8 power, V6 models will be available, and a Cummins diesel engine is rumored to be in the works for the Titan, as well. We still have another year or so before the new Titan debuts, so stay tuned for more details. We just hope this refresh will be enough to move Nissan's truck up from bottom-of-the-pack status.

Official: Ram reveals 2014 truck lineup, EcoDiesel V6 a $2,850 option on 1500 models

2014 Ram 1500

The fullsize pickup truck market is as competitive now as it's ever been, and with Ford's F-Series line leading the way in sales, GM's Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra twins boasting brand-new designs, you knew Ram wasn't about to rest on its laurels for the 2014 model year.

2014 Ram EcoDiesel engineAnd so we present to you the 2014 Ram lineup, with the biggest change being the addition of an optional 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine for the 1500 model (the same powerplant that's gotten rave reviews in the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee) and the proliferation of the eight-speed TorqueFlite transmission across the entire model range. That engine boasts 420 pound-feet of torque to go along with its 240 horsepower, which means it ought to be able to tow just about anything the 5.7-liter Hemi can, while returning significantly better fuel mileage. Sadly, Ram has not yet released official estimated mpg figures, though it is claiming best-in-class results (though there aren't any other light-duty diesel pickups to compare against).

Standard on Ram 1500 is the Pentastar V6 engine that was introduced for the 2013 model year, pushing 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, and the Hemi V8 is optionally available with 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. All engines are mated to the eight-speed automatic. The previously available 4.7-liter V8 has been dropped for 2014.

Pricing for the 2014 Ram 1500 begins at $24,200 (plus $1,095 destination), which is a slight increase over last year's $23,400 MSRP. Adding the diesel engine will increase the sticker by $2,850 over a similarly equipped Hemi model, though we'll have to wait for full pricing information to see how much it adds over the price of a standard V6-equipped Ram 1500. Other new bits and pieces for the Ram 1500 include a Front Park Assist system that utilizes four bezel-less, integrated sensors in the front bumper, and two new colors: Blue Streak and Granite Crystal.

Moving up the ladder to a Heavy Duty Ram brings with it the availability of a new 6.4-liter Hemi engine for an additional $1,495 over a similarly equipped model with 5.7-liter V8. With it comes 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and it's the first gasoline engine available in the dual-rear-wheel Ram 3500. The HD gets the same new colors as the 1500, plus new 18- and 20-inch wheel designs.

Finally, Ram is officially announcing the availability of the Promaster for 2014. Plenty more details can be found in the press release below, but first, be sure to check out the high-res image gallery above (1500) and below (HD, 5500 Chassis Cab and Promaster).

Report: Peugeot family to cede control to GM?

Peugeot Onyx wheel detail

It's doom and gloom time, folks - PSA Peugeot-Citroën is seriously on the ropes. According to a report from Reuters, citing those ever-so-mysterious "people familiar with the matter," suggests that the Peugeot family, which currently owns a 25.4-percent stake in the eponymous automaker and 38.1 percent of voting rights, "has now accepted that they will lose control" of the company. The rumormill churns with the possibility that control of Peugeot and Citroen will be handed over to General Motors, which spent $423 million to obtain seven percent of Peugeot last year.

If GM doesn't accept control of Peugeot, which would require a cash outlay that GM has already said it isn't going to spend (at least not without assurances that it will be allowed to shutter factories and lay off workers in France and Germany), analysts predict Peugeot will run out of cash before the end of 2013. Peugeot had previously turned to Dongfeng, a Chinese company it has allied with in the industrial sector, for assistance, but those talks have apparently stalled.

What would GM do with Peugeot if it were to make an additional investment? The answer is murky at best, but previous speculation had pinned a slew of shared platforms between the French automaker and GM's European arm, Opel, along with the consolidation of workforce and manufacturing capabilities. In other words, plant shutdowns, laid-off workers and the expected monetary savings those actions would bring.

The problem with the above scenario, though, is that the French government, which made a controversial investment of 7 billion euros ($9 billion USD) in the automaker's finance arm to guarantee its loans, is likely to resist large-scale workforce reductions and plant closures within its borders. Doom and gloom, indeed...

Le Mans to avoid 2014 F1 clash

Next year's Le Mans 24 Hours will not clash with a round of the Formula 1 World Championship. The FIA has announced the the 24 Hours will be held on June 14/15, which marks a return to its traditional mid-June date, and that an F1 race will not take place on the same weekend as the blue-riband round of the World Endurance Championship. The bulletin from today's meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council said: "In order to preserve the historic date of the Le Mans 24 Hours, which this year celebrated its 90th edition, the date of June 14/15 2014 has been retained to ensure that a F1 GP is not hosted the same weekend." Read This: Jeep Cherokee name revival reignites question of cultural insensitivity [w/poll]

2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk - front three-quarter view

The New York Times has published a new story that tackles the issue of ethnically charged product naming, this time in the auto industry. The paper dusts off the discourse because Chrysler has resurrected the Jeep Cherokee moniker for its latest model. Writer Glenn Collins uses the new Jeep as a jumping off point for a merry stroll through the auto industry's history of culturally insensitive and/or politically incorrect names and advertising.

In the piece, Chrysler representatives say that reusing the Cherokee name isn't meant to offend anyone, noting that the company hasn't received any feedback about the name being disparaging. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma has said that the group opposes stereotypes and applauds sports teams and schools for dropping offensive mascots, but has stopped short of criticizing the Jeep Cherokee based on its name. Officially, the Cherokee Nation has no stance on the matter, but spokesman Amanda Clinton says "it would have been nice for them to have consulted us in the very least."

It's worth noting that "Cherokee" has been an active Jeep product name for decades now (through its more upscale Grand Cherokee range), and the company has long shied away from the sort of imagery and caricatures that have come under fire in the sporting world and elsewhere (e.g. Major League Baseball's Chief Wahoo of the Cleveland Indians). Here on Autoblog, when the new Cherokee was revealed, many commenters openly groused about the name choice - but not because of its Native American ties. The issue for many, it would seem, is that this new model represents such a radical departure from the long-serving, much-loved XJ generation, that it has been deemed to not be an appropriate fit.

Do you have a problem with Jeep bringing back the Cherokee name because you think it's culturally insensitive, or is this much ado about nothing? Head over to The New York Times to read the piece for yourself, then vote in our poll below.

2014 BMW 4 Series convertible spy shot - front three-quarter view, red

We've seen a few spy shot packages featuring the upcoming BMW 4 Series Convertible already, but never with the car quite so naked as in this latest batch. Nabbed just outside the BMW Nürburgring workshop in Germany, this Melbourne Red 4 Series also shows the M Sport package for the first time.

With all of the cladding removed, we can see that the convertible shares the 4 Series coupe's great-looking nose and front end, though the resolution of that folding hard top into the rear bodywork remains a bit harsh.

With the 4 Series coupe now completely official, we have a pretty good idea of what the powertrain lineup for the 'vert will be. We'll be pretty surprised if a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo aren't the go-to engines at launch. Production of the droptop is likely to begin at the end of the year, so start bugging your local BMW dealer.

Video: Jaguar releases C-X75 concept build story

Jaguar C-X75 Concept Story - video screencap

If you want to know what was going through the minds of decisionmakers at Jaguar when the company decided to build the batty C-X75 Concept, look no further than the quick video after the jump. Jaguar set about building a car with the performance of a Bugatti Veyron, the electric range of a Chevrolet Volt and the emissions of a Toyota Prius, and they turned to a legendary engineering firm to help make it happen. Williams, the same crew behind Williams F1, helped Jaguar stitch the concept car together, and the result is unlike anything we've seen before.

The twin-charged 1.6-liter four-cylinder mounted amidship is paired with an electric motor at each wheel for a combined output of over 850 horsepower. And, since the whole chassis is hewn from carbon fiber, a production version would've been light enough to give machines like the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari a run for their money. Shame they apparently couldn't make the business case work. Watch the concept build story in the video below for yourself.

FIA toughens up F1 testing controls

Formula 1 teams now have to give the FIA at least a fortnight's notice of future testing plans, AUTOSPORT has learned, as part of a clampdown on policing out of event running by the governing body. In the wake of last week's International Tribunal hearing into the Mercedes secret Pirelli test after the Spanish Grand Prix, the FIA made it clear that it wanted to tighten up its control of testing.

This is how the season is shaping up . . . Looking at the numbers drivers should be aiming for a certain point total when it comes to finishing-off the season of online racing with the Williams-Toyota FW31. A driver with the point total of 2060 will clinch the championship and the magic number to clinch the top ten and obtain the elusive point total is 1870. So what is Marcus Lindsey doing holding down fifth in the standings, he of the P20 in a 2012 rookie campaign that produced just three top ten finishes, none in the top five?   What he’s doing is running up front every race, having only once qualified outside the top ten and gunning for his sixth front row start of the season in the virtual [...]

Mercedes: rookie test ban will hurt

Mercedes boss Ross Brawn says his team's development programme for the rest of the season will be hampered by having to miss Formula 1's young driver test. Video: Trans Am Depot teases 2014 GTO

2014 GTO by Trans Am Depot - video screencap

Here comes the Judge. Court is in session. The verdict is in. How many more tired clichés can we come up with? It hardly seems to matter, because it's happening: Trans Am Depot has announced via the teaser video below that it is launching a 2014 GTO, complete with Carousel Red (bright orange, really) paint and full Judge badging.

The car is based on Trans Am Depot's 6T9 Goat, which, in case you don't get the reverential references, is meant to mimic the look of the 1969 Pontiac GTO. As with the company's other cars -including the 2013 Hurst Edition Trans Am we recently drove - the GTO will be based on the current Chevy Camaro, which means two doors, V8 engines and rear-wheel drive, just like the muscle cars of days past.

As for actual details of what's under the 2014 GTO's hood, we're completely left hanging. We'd expect some sort of power adder (turbo, supercharger or possibly some other form of a highly massaged version of the Camaro's V8), and we certainly know that GM has any number of hi-po crate engines to choose from.

We're looking forward to seeing the finished product up close and personal, though we think our money would more likely be spent on a nice original '69 GTO if we had the choice. In any case, scroll down to watch the video and make the call for yourself.

Morbidelli wins as Vanthoor stars

Gianni Morbidelli took his first Superstars International Series win of the season at Zolder, while Laurens Vanthoor stole the show with a stunning drive from last to second. Starting from pole position on a greasy circuit, Morbidelli's only challenge was holding off the more powerful Mercedes of Tonio Liuzzi on the run down to the first corner. Having successfully held on to the lead, he then let the four-wheel-drive Audi Sport Italia RS5 do the rest of the work, pulling 2.8 seconds on the field on the first lap alone, before leading all the way to victory

Official: Lotus getting into the motorcycle business

Lotus Motorcycles emblem

Lotus founder Colin Chapman is famously quoted as saying something to the effect of "Simplify, then add lightness." We're a bit amazed that it took this long, but someone appears to be taking that message to heart at the British marque, losing a couple of wheels, a clutter of bodywork and a whole mess of weight. No, Lotus isn't planning another spindly Seven-style trackday racer, it's getting into motorcycles.

Well, sort of. As an automaker, Lotus apparently isn't directly behind this two-wheeled effort, but it does appear to have officially lent its brand and logo to a new company, Lotus Motorcycles, which counts former Volkswagen Group designer Daniel Simon, Germany's Holzer Group and auto racing team Kodewa among its partners. The latter builds and races Lotus' T128 Le Mans Prototype in the World Endurance Championship series.

The new company is touting an as-yet unseen motorcycle, a racing-inspired "hyper bike" called C-01, releasing only the image above - a carbon fiber fuel tank trimmed in Lotus' trademark black and gold livery. Details are tough to come by, but the project is said to include a powertrain good for around 200 horsepower and construction involving titanium, carbon fiber and aerospace-grade steel.

The C-01's shape will come from Simon, a designer who has not only worked at Bugatti, he's also credited with a few Hollywood fantasymobiles, including the Lightcycle from Tron: Legacy and more recently the "Bubbleship" spacecraft used by Tom Cruise in Oblivion. The company promises that the legendary Lotus 49 racecar was a "main inspiration" in its conception, and "all color schemes pay homage to iconic Lotus racing liveries." We can't wait to see more, but we'll have to - at least a little while. The company says we can expect further images and information in "the next few weeks." For more, check out the company's statement released via Facebook by scrolling below.

Allen Simonsen Aston Martin at Le Mans

Allan Simonsen - Le Mans driver killed in 2013 raceDanish racing driver Allan Simonsen has died as a result of injuries sustained during a crash at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. According to race officials, the 34-year-old was in serious condition after the accident and was immediately rushed to a hospital, where he died shortly thereafter.

The incident took place on the fourth lap of the race. Simonsen, a seven-year veteran of Le Mans racing, spun about 10-minutes into the race, hitting safety barriers at the Tertre Rouge bend.

The No. 95 Aston Martin that Simonsen co-drove along with teammates Christoffer Nygaard and Kristian Poulsen has officially retired from the race. Our condolences to all those close to Simonsen.
