Ferrari vows it won’t be underdog in ’13

Ferrari is confident that it will be able to provide Fernando Alonso with a car that is capable of winning the Formula 1 championship next year after his near-miss in 2012. Alonso led the points at various stages this year, but he was unable to overcome a performance deficit with the F2012 that left him playing catch-up to Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull.

Ecclestone: Pass furore a complete joke

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone believes the controversy over Sebastian Vettel's overtaking move in the Brazilian Grand Prix is a "complete joke". Vettel took his third championship after finishing in sixth position in Brazil, but rival Ferrari said it was reviewing video footage allegedly showing the Red Bull driver passing Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne in a yellow-flag sector between Turns 3 and 4 on the fourth lap. Since then, however, the FIA has made it clear there is no case to answer as it was clear a green flag was being waved before Vettel completed the pass.

Report: Ex-GM marketing chief Ewanick winds up at Fisker

Big fish, meet small pond. Automotive News reports that former head of global marketing for General Motors, Joel Ewanick, has just joined Fisker Automotive as its head of global sales and marketing on an interim basis. Ewanick held GM's top marketing post for 18 months and left this summer in a fog of intrigue and budgetary musical chairs said to be related to a sponsorship deal with the English soccer club Manchester United.

Gossip is that he's been consulting with companies ever since, Fisker included. When the Karma company's head of sales and marketing, Richard Beattie, announced his retirement, it was easy for Fisker to ask Ewanick to fill in because Fisker Automotive's CEO is Tony Posawatz, former chief engineer of the Chevy Volt.

Although the move is being billed as "interim" at the moment, a Fisker spokesman wouldn't say whether Ewanick could take the position full-time. No doubt everyone will be looking to see how he does, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him stick around if he can make some big moves quickly, which is his forte - even so, his task at the small plug-in in hybrid maker will be different, but probably just as challenging, as that as GM.

Report: Entry-level Jaguar X-Type successor due in 2015, crossover a year later

Jaguar's future product plans keep on slipping, slipping, slipping onto the internet, and the latest on it's entry-level luxury challenger is a 2015 due date. According to Automobile magazine, "most significant game-changer from Coventry" will be arriving on the same PLA platform that supports the Jaguar XJ and 2013 Range Rover. Kacher says the small sedan has already got the green light as codename X760, and will bow first as a four-door sedan, then as a crossover a year later.

This puts a date to a recent Autocar report that a small sedan and crossover were in the works. We've been getting reports of and concepts for a successor to the X-Type ever since Tata bought Jaguar - like the Bertone B99 concept last year, and this enthusiast concept more recently - since everyone knows it's what has to happen for "a new Jaguar" to succeed. We're looking forward to seeing what the English maker comes up with; if it remains true to form, it could be one of the few luxury competitors whose distinct model each look, well, truly distinct.

Alonso keen to just enjoy race now

Fernando Alonso says he will go into the Formula 1 championship-deciding Brazilian Grand Prix in a relaxed frame of mind as there is nothing more he and Ferrari can now do . Alonso will start the finale three places behind Sebastian Vettel on the Interlagos grid, but needs to score 14 more points than the Red Bull driver to beat him to the title. "There's not something that we can invent now, some great strategies or something like that," Alonso said.

Defeated Alonso hails best season yet

Fernando Alonso labelled his and Ferrari's 2012 Formula 1 efforts as perfect despite losing out to Sebastian Vettel in the championship battle after a thrilling Brazilian Grand Prix. The Spaniard went into the season finale 13 points behind Vettel and, during some stages of the race, Alonso was in a situation that would have allowed him to clinch his third title. In the end, however, Alonso came in second and Vettel was sixth, a result that gave the Red Bull driver his third title by three points.

Official: Nissan prices the 2013 Versa, Cube and Armada

Nissan Versa

Nissan has revealed prices for three of its 2013 offerings: the Versa, Cube and Armada. There are no exterior revisions for any beyond paint choices, but all get new combinations in packaging and tech along with minor price increases.

The Versa goes up in price by $1,000. The base, five-speed manual Versa S rings up at $11,990 before the $790 destination and handling charge. Even at that price, the Versa remains the least expensive new car in America to buy. A 1.6 S AT with a four-speed automatic joins the lineup on top of the five-speed and the Xtronic CVT, bringing 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway to the mix. A new S Plus trim gets cruise control and two more rear speakers.

Aero enhancements like low-rolling resistance tires, an air intake guide, rear spoiler and rear wheel and underbody air deflectors mean that every CVT Versa gets 40 highway mpg, up from 38 mpg in 2012. The Versa line maxes out at $16,590 for the 1.6 SL CVT.

The 2013 Cube goes up by $180, now starting at $16,760 before $790 for destination and handling. For 2013, Nissan axes the base 1.8 model, leaving just S and SL trims. Transmission choices remain a six-speed manual or CVT.

The 2013 Armada's price rises by $840 to $40,710 before the $995 destination fee. A new Platinum Reserve Package makes the priciest Armada sticker at $56,180. It includes 20-inch dark chrome wheels, dark chrome grille and outside mirrors, two-tone Chocolate/Almond leather seating, and dark satin chrome interior accents. For the back-seaters, the single eight-inch screen for the DVD system becomes two seven-inch, headrest-mounted screens.

The press releases below have more details on each of the new offerings.

Ferrari confidence boosted by practice

Ferrari can head into the Brazilian Grand Prix with a level of confidence about its chances of fighting Red Bull wheel-to-wheel after an encouraging opening day of practice, reckons Felipe Massa. Although Lewis Hamilton topped the times in both practice sessions, Ferrari was boosted by the fact that Massa produced the best long-run form of the day. That result, allied to the fact Massa made a mistake on his fastest lap so could go even quicker over a single lap, has left the Brazilian upbeat about the potential for the season finale

GM partnering with tire researchers for better fuel economy

National Tire Research Center

Starting next year, General Motors engineers will work with researchers at the National Tire Research Center in an effort to create safer and more efficient tires. The automaker has invested $5 million in the facility in Halifax, Virginia, which uses cutting-edge tire performance machinery to recreate real-world driving events.

The $11.2 million test equipment can spin a tire to the equivalent of 200 mph while monitoring data on handling, ride, torque and braking forces and replicating various road conditions. GM says tire efficiency can theoretically be increased up to seven percent by varying attributes like tread design, construction and manufacturing techniques.

GM hopes its work at the National Tire Research Center will help the company advance the arrival of next-generation tire technology, thereby increasing vehicle efficiency and reducing fuel consumption at the same time. You can take a closer look at the full press release below for more information.

Motorsports: Michael Schumacher has driven around the Earth twice in an F1 car

In Texas, during what will go down as one of the absolute best inaugural Grand Prix weekends in series history, there was yet another Formula One record set by his lordship, the soon to retire Michael Schumacher of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 squad. And, no, it wasn't his finishing in 16th place and lapped by the leaders that got the attention. Nor was it his recent purchase of a 500-acre horse ranch in Texas.

While watching the broadcast television coverage, the chief commentator announced that, upon the completion of Lap 10 of the 3.4-mile Circuit of the Americas, Schumacher became the most traveled Formula One pilot in history. That lap saw him clock 80,000 kilometers - or 49,710 miles - in competition in an F1 car over 19 seasons. By the time he finishes the 2012 F1 season finale on November 25th in Brazil, that'll be over two-times the 24,901-mile circumference of planet Earth driven in a Formula One car.

This feat outdistanced the record set by his former Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello, though it is not known if Barrichello came to the Mercedes trailer after the race to congratulate the seven-time F1 champ. Rubens was, after all, a guest of honor over at the Ferrari compound.
